What is Good at Lala's Grill on Melrose?

I've never heard of this place, but have been invited there for dinner this Saturday. Threads on Lala's look pretty old.

Anyone been there? What's good to eat?

  1. decent steak frites argentinian style.

    1. It has been years but I always like the swordfish kebab

      1. I like their empanandas and mashed potatoes Lala's (mashed carrots and potatoes). Also, the bread and chimmichurri they put on the table is really good, very addictive and extremely filling.

Thanks, all. I figure since it's an Argentinian place I may go for a steak.

Been there twice (the last time was ~4 yrs ago). My recollection from those 2 visits is that, oddly enough, steak is actually NOT their strong point. If I were to go again, I would go w/ the non-classically Argentinian fare, actually.

A beef-based entrée may be ok, but do not get the steak per se.
If you want an Argentinian steak, you must travel further west on Melrose to Carlito's Gardel, north side of the street, just west of Fairfax - that is the real deal.
And if you like Malbec wine, Gardel has a HUGE selection.

Thanks Carter and Ilysla. (I happen to love Malbec. I may have to try out that place.)

Looks like they have a number of pasta dishes. Maybe I'll try one of those out.

all and all lalas is pretty tasty and fun - have a good time

Yes, I think one of my friends ordered the milanesa, which was pretty tasty.

The pasta (which apparently *is* a part of Argentinian cuisine, I think) at Carlitos Gardel was good, and the chimichurri was FANTASTIC.

I was a little disappointed by the texture by whatever steak I had Carlitos Gardel (taste was very good), but perhaps that's b/c I tend to order skirt steak the few times I've been to an Argentinian place.

Of course, this is all based on memories from experiences of several yrs ago, so YMMV. ;)

            2. I always like their mollejas (sweetbreads) - a simple preparation sauteed in garlic and olive oil.
