dark days for pizza

  • 8

Both Stellars and Piecora's closed or closing. Not good!! OK, the pizza in some of the newer places is decent but--expensive and oh so artisanal. For years my wife and I could go to one of the above spots, eat half a pie and bring the other half home. All with decently priced micro-brew pitchers. At the new, hoity-toity spots we'd have to order 2 pies to have decent leftovers. As I said--dark days!!

EatFoodGetMoney, I couldn't find the right words to let you know why Piecora and Stellar are/were special, but this Stranger piece does a pretty good job.

Yep, you could sit there & watch them toss your pizza, remarkable. And there was a piano in the back which I played many times, remarkable.

        Bye Piecora's :^(

    2. Stellar, especially, makes me sad. It was the first decent pizza I found when I first moved to Seattle, and I was a regular there for many months.

That said, I have recently had excellent pie at Proletariat in White Center that was delightfully traditional, very well prepared, even better the next day, and not hatefully priced. Not even really similar to Stellar, but might help fill the big round hole their closing will leave.

      1. Have you tried Flying Squirrel? Seems like the shoe would fit. If even that is too artisanal and not sufficiently filling, I think maybe Northlake Tavern is still open.

It is. I just don't like their pizza. At all. It is a unique, one-of-a-kind pizza, but the cracker crust is not to my taste.

I always liked Piecora's, but can only speak for their plain cheese pie. For years they ran a coupon in the Stranger, large 18" cheese for $9 on Monday nights!

        2. +1 for Proletariat..I've been underwhelmed by Flying Squirrel twice...blandest dough ever both times.

Huh, we've enjoyed Flying Squirrel the three or four times we've been there. Have only been to the one down near Hillman City, though.

The place we didn't feel merited the hype was Phoenicia out on Alki.

Stellar is definitely a loss, though.
