Ranch House Cafe in Olancha, Route 395 - Great Breakfasts
In the past few years I've visited Death Valley and other destinations off Route 395 a number of times, and have found that with the exception of some well known places in Bishop, this corridor is considered pretty much a wasteland for decent food.
Well, this past Sunday I happily stumbled upon Ranch House Cafe in Olancha, just 1/4 mile north of the 190 on Route 395. My sister, wife and I had a fantastic breakfast there. The corned beef hash and eggs were excellent, the fried breakfast potatoes exceptionally crisp, flavorful and tender, the biscuit and gravy rocked (could have used a bit more seasoning), and the pancakes were huge and delicious.
Service was excellent and the price was fair. It's a small, Western themed little restaurant on the east side of the highway. If you're heading north you'll see the Jerkey shack on the right side, and not a 1/2 mile up the road, to your left, will be Ranch House Cafe.
It will be my new stop for meals on Routhe 395. I'm looking forward to trying their lunches.
I've been there for lunch and it was just ok. Breakfast is definitely better. But we're always looking for something edible other than fast food along 395 while on the way to or from Mammoth, and one can do worse than the Ranch House cafe (and I have).
Don't overlook The Still Life Cafe in Independence - French heritage owners. Too late for lunch, but they use Lavazza for their French press coffee so worthy of a second look. Gets nice reviews from those who do get to dine, either lunch or dinner.
