Is there a place in the burbs that does onion rings shaved like strings piled high instead of big fat rings?

this is beyond the suburbs, but Werts Café in Allentown is well known for their onion rings which are exactly as you describe. One order easily will serve 4.(note: while they are very good, they are also very greasy)

Go to the far, far burbs in Tampa, Florida.
Bern's Steakhouse in addition to the longest wine list in the world serves all their steaks with a huge mass of the onion rings you seek.

Nothing in my area. I will just have to manage without them.

This won't help you, but Memphis Taproom in Fishtown/Kensington makes spicy onion rings like this and they are really good.

Legal Sea Foods does onion strings (first place I ever had them), but I'm not seeing them in the online menu for King of Prussia. Oddly, they are on the Burlington, MA menu.

It seems to have been a New England style; I had them years ago in Providence and on the Cape.

Red Hot and Blues BBQ does an onion loaf that is kind of like that. They have a location in Cherry Hill.
