Wild/Alpine Strawberries

I've never had these but have heard people speak of them in hushed tones. Does anyone know if there's ever a way to find them in Chicago? I understand they travel/keep really poorly.

  1. Maybe look for a jam you can have shipped? Best strawberries I've ever had I picked in the Swiss alps on trails (but not too close...yuck.) Intense, sun-warmed and...oh man so good! I've found lots of wild strawberries all over the US and I've definitely seen jams/jellies for sale but the higher/cooler you are the better. Or maybe I just think that because of the thin air messing with my brain.

...but if you're looking for the white ones I have no clue.

I totally understand your desire. Personally, I'd do bad, bad things to get my paws on fresh cloudberries.

I'll look into jam if I turn up nothing looking for fresh. Any recommendations on that end?

I've read that they grow in Minnesota, although even that would probably be pushing it since that same person quoted a few hours as enough time to seriously affect picked wild strawberries.

    2. I can't speak to wild Alpine strawberries, but I do look for the wild strawberries that are sometimes available at the Green City Market. They are quite wonderful and NOTHING like commercial strawberries.

Do you know when these usually show up?

I seem to recall May, June and maybe September. They are usually small and have a delightfully strong strawberry aroma. I can't get enough of them.

Thanks! I'll try to get up there in May. Do you know if there are specific vendors I might call?

And for the future if anyone sees them around Chicago an update here would be appreciated.
