  1. I do agree with Barnacle Bill's for casual fare (hamburgers) and Restaurant Nicholas for that special event meal (excellent food), despite its sterile and noisy atmosphere. Haven't been to the others. Korean Fusion Tacos sounds interesting.

    1. These appear to be in no particular order and are not divided into any sort of categories. Mogo is a cute Idea and offers some unique and tasty food but are they honestly being touted as the best restaurant in Monmouth County? Really?

      1. is this based on the number of reviews?

Yep, number of reviews. I like Mogo and all but there are much better places in Asbury alone

        2. I find it interesting that people on yelp frequent Nicholas. I think of yelp as more "lower end" restaurant reviews.

          1. I go to Barnacle Bills regularly (went last night) but to be honest the only thing I order is a burger. Most other items on the menu I can get better quality elsewhere.
            But the Burgers Ummm!

I concur and add it's just not the same without the peanut shells.

I was there last night too. did you see a really good looking guy wearing a hat that said Pelagic?

Just kidding about the really good looking part LOL

I was there though and my cheddar burger was tasty as hell.

                1. re: Eric in NJ

As it happens, we ate there tonight. My wife had the cheeseburger which she thought was excellent. I had one of the specials....blackened salmon with broccoli & hollandaise, potato, and a salad with the house dressing. I really enjoyed my meal as well. Not the most inexpensive place to eat, but IMHO worth it as a "special treat" for us every once in a while. Service was very friendly & efficient, too. Our waitress did a nice job. Good food in a casual / comfortable atmosphere.

                  1. re: bakersma

The melted cheese product doesn't do it for me. Go with the mozzarella option on the burger.

                    1. re: coldbeer

is that a joke? seriously, the cheddar sauce put barnacles on the map.

they have american and swiss too....anything but mozz LOL

                      1. re: coldbeer

Mozzarella on a burger? OK, sign me up for American processed cheese on Veal Parmagiana...

                        1. re: equal_Mark

Its funny you say this Mark. My wife's friend came to Barnacles with us and she orders a well done burger with mozzarella then puts kethcup on it to boot. It almost made my juicy medium rare cheddar burger taste not so good at the moment.

On a side note, I will hit up el rancho soon. any recommendations on what to get?

                          1. re: corvette johnny

For what it's worth in that area I actually prefer Acapulquenos, El Oaxaqueno 3 or La Valentino to El Rancho...

                              1. re: Tapas52

Tapas, The post you refer to was specific to Mexica places in Long Branch. As to Bonao:

                                A) It's not Mexican
                                B) I've never been there.
                                c) It's not in Monmouth County.

                                1. re: equal_Mark

                                  Whoops....lol
might not be far off in "MC" a few miles off....but the food is great! .. ;-)

                              2. re: equal_Mark

thanks, I have to add those to my list.

Have you tried papagayos right near adas yet?

                                1. re: corvette johnny

Are they still there? I thought the had closed within the past year. The last time I had eaten there was while they were still located across Atlantic Ave. in River's Edge Plaza.

                      1. Still picking my chin off the floor with mention of The Buttered Biscuit.

                        1. Went to MOGO for lunch today and Nicholas last night. I'm not saying I agree with their choices but those were two good meals ;o)

Seal, did you try the shaved foie appetizer at Nicholas? I'd be interested to hear your opinion. It is their "take" on p b &j, here is their description:Foie Gras Terrine, Strawberry Jam, Brown Butter, To
                            asted Peanuts ($5 supp)

Interesting, in a weird way. However, not a lot of foie taste (lots of frozen/shaved foie), and it was so rich it was very heavy as a starter.

                            1. re: TomT

Funny story. I arrived about a half hour before I expected my wife, lucked into a table in Bar N and ordered a glass of the Maury. The waiter asked, "The dessert wine?" I told him I know, smiled, and asked for the foie as well.
I told him to also bring the check so I could finish, pay, and he could clear the plate so my wife would think I waited for her to eat. It is tight in the bar and the couple next to me burst out laughing, saying they didn't mean to eavesdrop but they could relate.
To answer your q, yes it was heavy and dessert-y. Tasty, but I prefer a seared lobe as I make a foie terrine and jelly sandwich at home.

                              1. re: seal

Lol, nice maneuver. Thanks, thought it was just me.
