Shellfish -- L.A. Dish of the Month, April 2014

SHELLFISH - LA Dish of the Month (April 2014)

The dish of the month for Los Angeles for March 2014 is Shellfish.

Here's a link to the voting thread:

The goal is to collectively try as many different varieties, kinds and types of shellfish. Anything shellfish-related is fair game. And, it goes without saying, that telling us of fabulous places to find shellfish (and all of its various iterations) that you've tried in the past is great, and recounting vivid memories is also fun, but what we want are real-live, current progress reports of what and where you are finding and eating pies.

So let's start exploring and eating—report back with reviews and photos.

Along the same lines, on Sunday 3/30, I had lunch at Gjelina. Started out with 1 dozen cold, sweet, Kumamoto oysters ($32), a hangar steak sandwich, some killer indian spiced carrots with yoghurt, and for dessert...wait for it...PIE, as in a lamb sausage pizza pie. Sure, I too was a couple days early for SHELLFISH but ya know just getting over the dramatic loss of STEAKANDEGGS. Oh well, maybe the month of May will be my month.

You can get steak at Gjelina. Add egg on your pizza. Slide it over and top your steak with it when it arrives...

          2. I don't normally eat shellfish, but I actually can make one contribution (albeit from late March) - a Rhode Island diver scallop crudo with caviar, fennel, and nasturtiums at Maude. Again, not normally my thing, but I loved this dish. The flavor of the scallops was extremely fresh and clean, and the whole dish was perfectly balanced.

Fun restaurant. Lot's of food to share. Expect to spend around $40 a person. Roy Choi's take on Korean. Not somewhere you'd take your Korean grandmother.
