SHELLFISH - LA Dish of the Month (April 2014)

The dish of the month for Los Angeles for March 2014 is Shellfish.

Here's a link to the voting thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/970179

The goal is to collectively try as many different varieties, kinds and types of shellfish. Anything shellfish-related is fair game. And, it goes without saying, that telling us of fabulous places to find shellfish (and all of its various iterations) that you've tried in the past is great, and recounting vivid memories is also fun, but what we want are real-live, current progress reports of what and where you are finding and eating pies.

So let's start exploring and eating—report back with reviews and photos.

Uh-oh. If that was last nite or before then it don't count.

HAHAHAHA it's my month and I'll post what I want!! ;)

              1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Along the same lines, on Sunday 3/30, I had lunch at Gjelina. Started out with 1 dozen cold, sweet, Kumamoto oysters ($32), a hangar steak sandwich, some killer indian spiced carrots with yoghurt, and for dessert...wait for it...PIE, as in a lamb sausage pizza pie. Sure, I too was a couple days early for SHELLFISH but ya know just getting over the dramatic loss of STEAKANDEGGS. Oh well, maybe the month of May will be my month.

                1. re: orythedog

You can get steak at Gjelina. Add egg on your pizza. Slide it over and top your steak with it when it arrives...

          2. I don't normally eat shellfish, but I actually can make one contribution (albeit from late March) - a Rhode Island diver scallop crudo with caviar, fennel, and nasturtiums at Maude. Again, not normally my thing, but I loved this dish. The flavor of the scallops was extremely fresh and clean, and the whole dish was perfectly balanced.

            1. Pots at Roy Choi's new POT with shellfish
Redondo Beach: spicy crab, bean sprouts, sesame, onions, nira, tofu ($35/$65/$86)

Fisherman's Wharf: rock cod, crab, sardines, clams, mussels, fish roe, shrimp, tofu, daikon, scallion, sesame, spicy paste, herbs ($39/$72/$96)

                worth the cost?

                1. re: ns1

Fun restaurant. Lot's of food to share. Expect to spend around $40 a person. Roy Choi's take on Korean. Not somewhere you'd take your Korean grandmother.

              2. Lunch at Fishing With Dynamite on Sunday. (2 of us)
                2 dozen oysters
                1 crab cake
                1 shrimp Po Boy
                1 Key lime pie
                1 chocolate pretzel bread pudding
                All delicious.

                  Sounds wonderful!

                2. I'm guessing that crab cakes count, right? Had some nice ones tonight at Craig's. They come two to an order with a nice remoulade.

I am all-in this month! SHELLFISH, here I come. And fillet Oscar is not out of the question!

                    2. OK, I'll play:

We had a dinner at Scopa, on Washington near the foot of Abbot Kinney. One of the several dishes was the scallops. There were two of them, big but just two, for $15 (I think). They were nice, caramelized on top and bottom, tender and not rubbery within. But with a party of six, taking a third of one and then passing the hot small cast-iron skillet... No accompaniments, just some buttery remains in the vessel.

A good dish? I thought my bites (not everyone sampled) were good, but my cousin thought he tasted sand. But two scallops for $15 with no additions?

Same executive chef at Black Market Liquor in Studio City, and the same pricing. This "tapas" size dining has me down. I like a regular plate of food.

Maybe it was tiny because it was an antipasti....not a main course. http://scopaitalianroots.com/menu/

3 nice sized scallops on top of a bed of delicious mushrooms @ angelini osteria, also an antipasti, only $3 more.

I wouldn't be able to handle that dish.

                              Dynamite is my kryptointe.

But I may be able to handle those tiny Tacos. Though I'll need a triple order. In addition to my toro tartare. And a halibut Tiradito.

Is there an HH here ???? With ultra reduced prices ??????

                              This is truly your month.

                              1. re: kevin

No I don't believe they do happy hour...or ever reduce the prices. Yes the tacos are minuscule...i guess thats how Malibu socialites stay so slim....and they get you by requiring that you order two of each type, so if you want to taste different ones, you are ordering four minimum at a price maximum.... I was fortunate that my MIL was in town and treated me to the lovely lunch there last week. Otherwise, I still would not have made it yet over there.

                                  Thanks Dirty.

Yeah, ok, maybe I'll hold off...

                            2. Octopus Salad at The Crusty Crab at Ports 'O Call in San Pedro. Recipe unchanged since the Slavic fisherman
bought it here many moons ago. Don't buy this dish
anywhere else in the village. It's not the same.

Twelve & ten. My youngest used to be obsessed with the show...thankfully he finally got over it about two years ago. But Lord knows I've seen every episode at least twice.... Creator was friggin brilliant, wish I'd had thought of it, he's a gazillionaire now.....

Yea, kinda hard to admit to more than that.....

                              2. Popcorn Shrimp........looking for similar to Cheesecake Factory's (no longer on menu) appetizer portion, fresh not frozen, battered not breaded, spicy mayo dipping sauce. Best I've found at Killer Shrimp in MDR. Any other's chow worthy?

                                1. Tried the scallops with spring pea puree, lardons, and brussel crisps at AltaEats this week ... can recommend quite highly indeed :)

                                  1. Sorry, No picture, but I had the Whitby Platter at The Olde Ship in Fullerton for lunch today. It came with one piece of fried cod and three fried shrimp. The shrimp weren't remarkable, but they were well breaded and cooked. They tasted great dipped in the spicy curry sauce I ordered on the side.

I know, pretty weak contribution, but the month is young.

                                    1. Went to Sotto on a whim this evening.

Had the Spicy Clams In Guazzetto. As good as ever.

Also had the bread w/ burrata, the fileja Calabresi w/ spicy sausage ragu, and a new special of crispy skin Tai snapper w/ mashed peas, and a spring garlic broth. All very good!

the spicy clams are always on the menu.

Clams, 'nduja, pigeon peas, and greens in broth with grilled bread.

                                            1. Finally made it to Orleans and York on Slauson: I had the fried oyster po boy; my wife the fried shrimp. Just delicious, and the side of fries. We'll be back, but maybe try the Florence location, since the parking here is really bad. Two cars had scrapes in the lot while we watched eating. Still truly worth the trip.

                                              1. Ebiton (shrimp & pork ramen) at Ramen Hayatemaru (West LA location):

Verdict: Lots of shrimpy goodness in that base broth. It is a bowl that every ramenphile should try.

                                                    -Crab with rice cake
-Loofa with crab (may be invalid entry since there was no detectable crab)

Gratuitous shot of the Shanghai braised pork which they crush here. SP's braised pork BELLY will be responsible for my future generation's diabetes...so delicious and lusciously tender. With a bowl of rice it makes a perfectly acceptable last meal.

                                                        3. Had the crab cakes at Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel Air as starter for dinner tonite. High quality lump crab, almost no filler. each crab cake was approximately 1.5 tablespoons. Served with a basil pesto. $21 dollars. They were OK; I don't know that I have had an excellent crab cake on the west coast but I keep trying.

                                                          1. I had a delicious pasta special tonight at Adoteca in Brentwood (part of their two day uni tasting menu): squid ink tagliolini with clams, tomatoes and sea urchin. The other two uni dishes on the menu are an appetizer of sea bass carpaccio with uni and a main of butter poached lobster with uni, burrata, mache and pomegranate.

It's an old-school (I hate how Roy Choi uses that term to describe almost everything) Mexican loncheria truck. Its Salvation Army/Auto Repair Shops/Construction Equipment Purveyor adjacent location seems to attract a rough crowd.

I pimp the braised pork at Shanghailander as much as I do RM, the omakase at Shunji as much as the ramen at Zetton, the pizza at Sotto, the house special noodles at Trieu Chau, etc.

other dishes to get there are deep fried squid (very crunchy and nice), sauteed pea shoots, and the beef broth with bones which is usually a free app if you're splurging on lobster anyhow. if you're solo and a 3 lb lobster too much, they will do the house special lobster with prawns instead which is more than ample for one.

                                                                                                    1. re: jessejames

FWD was jammed so I wound up next door at MB Post last night and enjoyed delicious mussels in green curry with Chinese sausage and coriander rice--a dish I have liked since when it first opened. I wish they would go back to the original version of the shrimp with beluga lentils, though (served as a soup in a canning jar), the new version is fine but lacks the comfort of the former and seems less intense in flavor.

I don't know how often he has them. I guess you have to either follow his Twitter or get lucky.

I like their basic, cheap tacos and use them as a vehicle for consuming massive amounts of their hottest hot sauce combined with their hot chili sauce.

Uni with truffles is even better. My dining companion who is allergic to shellfish got one with black truffles that night.

I had the scallop crudo at the new Ladies Gunboat Society at Flores, done up in a buttermilk vin with grated ham, mint, baby fava beans and fried parsnip chips, Interesting and delicious prep.

Not specifically about the crudo but more about the whole experience since you seem to be the only hound that's been to this new version or at least have mentioned it.

Tried both dishes at both trucks - stick to these recs and you will be happy. And the Chocoflan looked good but that is another thread.

CT style, small but very good, full of claw & tail meat, buttered roll. It had a garnish of sliced scallion & sugar snap peas, that were lightly pickled. I removed it at first, but it really complemented the roll once I tried it. Also had a cup of their bouillabaisse which was excellent and chock full of seafood.
