Best Pizza in North Carolina?

Zagat's has just announced that the best pizza in North Carolina is the South of the Border pizza at Lily's Pizza in Raleigh.

Go here and scroll through the listing:

http://www.zagat.com/b/50-state-50-pi...

They say, "The South of the Border at Lilly’s features, yes, atomic sauce, along with black bean salsa, diced jalepeños, roasted chiles and a bunch of ingredients that won’t melt your mouth off like chicken, sharp cheddar and Monterey jack."

So there you have it, in case you were wondering.

  1. All I can say is that I won't be taking their recommendations on pizza in the Carolinas. Although they do seem to know what they're talking about in NY and CT.

This may cause me to question any of their recommendations in the state.

    2. They must have not tried Pizzeria Toro (when it was open) in Durham or Sticks & Stones in Greensboro.

Or even a few other places in Raleigh. I have *no* idea what they based their judgement on, but it sure wasn't any of the criteria I would have used.

      2. To me, a "best of" designation implies the rater has tried every other deserving pie in NC, which beggars belief. Lilly's Pizza in Raleigh was good when we tried it, but we weren't blown away

        1. Interesting game. The only way to win is not to play at all.

          1. Lilly's may sell pizzas for a living, but they're not serious about pizza. it's a fun place on a relaxed night when beer and friends are your priority. pizza is just an after-thought.

You can say the same thing about Chuck e Cheese.
