Costco: Beware of Jonah Crab Cakes.

  • s
  • 6

Beware of Pete's Seafood "Jonah's Crab Cakes", $18.00 for 12 cakes.
The package picture looks good!
The cakes look good through the package window.
BUT the cakes are made from finely ground crab and secondary fillers. Tastes like a mouth full of mush!
Returning the second half package tomorrow for refund.

  1. Beware?
I thought you were going to say that you got sick after eating them!
For $18, you're getting what you pay for.
Good crab cakes take good lump crab, which goes for around $35 per pound by me.

The good news is that Costco will refund your purchase.

    1. Gosh, the package looks great, I've seen this before somewhere. Let's see 12 cakes for $18.00 what a steal for crab cakes. Does the box say 'Lump' anywhere? probably not. Ever get a can of chicken soup with a few tiny cubes of chicken in it? but the pic on the can looked fab. For $18, it isn't going to have lump crab in it, indeed probably specs of crab or ground up crab specs. In fairness to you, I'd go to the Costco Corp website and write a comment, keep it pleasant, and let them know that your expectations were not met and that just maybe Costco may not want to carry this product too much longer. Good thing Costco has a great return policy.

I remember ordering Eggs "Chesapeake" at brunch one time.
I think maybe, perhaps, they waved a crab *over* the pot ;-)

Food photography can be deceiving, so it's buyer beware.

I think the tip here was the price- no way you're getting quality at that price.
If you're familiar with good crab product, you know to stay away from cheap products like this.

I think it's a good idea to contact Costco because I think they do care if they are selling inferior products.
        This one sounds yuck.

Yah, I agree. I don't think I'd ever buy a frozen prepared crab cake. That's an item you need to make fresh with quality ingredients.

I used to buy Phillips mini's from Costco- not terrible in a pinch, but not my jumbo lumps ;)

      2. Sounds exactly like Matlaw's stuffed clams; 98% filler and 2% clam. Still quite tasty tho.
