Hong Kong food names
I'm heading to hong kong for the first time in mid april for 5 days. I've been reading through this forum as well as open rice, however I wanted to verify the correct spelling of some of the dishes in hong kong as the names vary. Ofcourse I want to try lots of local cuisine but I want to make sure to try my favorites. I looked up the chinese names to help with identification
Beef Chow Fun 干炒牛河
Xiao Long Bao 小笼包
Char Siu Bao 叉烧包
Peking Duck (with the pancakes)
炸兩 Not sure the english word, rice noodle wrapped youtiao
cheong fun 豬腸粉
Ja Jiang Mien 炸酱面
crispy roasted pork 燒肉
red bean soup
I think much of this is dim sum food.
I've found lots of tips on this forum already, but feel free to list your recommendations. I think beef chow fun is the only one I haven't found much of.
I am pretty certain all the dishes you have listed will be on English menus and many places have them. The English menu is often more limited than the Cantonese one but the dishes in cantons will be far more exotic than these. Most restaurants will also have waiters who understand English, or at least some who do.
I only speak mandarin and can't really read Chinese, although I can recognize some of the dishes I listed up there. I know the english names for some of the dishes can vary. Like Beef Chow fun. In Singapore, they do Beef Hor Fun. When I search for many of the dishes on OpenRice, I don't get many hits. I figure it is because they use a different english spelling.
