Belcampo Cheeseburger

  • TonyC Mar 26, 2014 03:38 PM

Do it.

$12.50, no fries. 1/3 lb ("5.5" oz), grass fed, dry aged (21 days) from cows grow (hopefully) in Cali, on a 10K acre ranch, run by an ex Slow Food ED. Topped with some caramelized onions, 2 sheets of butter leaf, cheddah, sesame brioche bun (which wasn't too sweet). Comes with a side of aioli, which it didn't need. It leaned towards the salty and loose side

It's a steakhouse burger, served at a nouveau deli counter (or to-go! not that I'd recommend that).

Out of the non hood burgers I've had in the last 3-4 years in LA, this one is easily... the most morally righteous. And nearly as tasty. Please don't respond with complaints regarding price, location, hipsters, parking, gentrification, Bay Area, etc. Otherwise, if anyone has more Belcampo burger porn, please attach. I'd like to keep this thread as a master Belcampo burger spank bank for when anyone's hungry.

  1. :DDDDD WILL be by this weekend... Thanks for the thumbs up. The Burger at Egg Slut is always over cooked! :PPPP

    --Dommy!

    1. Sold. This looks beautiful.

      1. Was just featured on Tasting Table. The one in this link is too raw for me but, Tony's above looks fine. http://www.tastingtable.com/entry_det...

        1. I forwarded a copy of the Tasting Table piece to the non-carnivorous Mrs. O, and she in turn sent me two photos of the pork, beef and lamb on display there from her iPhone. One advantage of working just down the street … she did offer to pick up something for me, but I'd actually rather deal with traffic and parking and do my own shopping.

          That is a perfectly acceptable price for a burger with those qualifications; I've paid more for worse. I would want a bit more cooking than either photo shows, but everything else about it looks sublime. Yay, Grand Central!

            the GCM transformation is nothing short of amazing.

            1. re: ns1

              ns1, I'd been sharing J. Gold's trepidation about gentrification kicking out the good old stuff, but it's beginning to look like whatever changes is more likely to be an honest improvement than a rude hipster-related displacement. Hope that continues. I'm overdue for a trip down there anyway …

              1. re: Will Owen

                some call it gentrification, others call it progress.

            2. re: Will Owen

              FWIW, mine was stamped "medium rare" -- it came w/ a doneness flag. I assume Synder @ TT ordered his "barely dead". The medium rare was done just about perfect in every single way.

              The $12 Nick & Stef HH (fries compris) was downright pathetic compared to this.

            3. A perfect way to chase an Eggslut...

              2. Looks delicious. Apparently they're opening an outpost in Santa Monica right near Huckleberry. That's gonna be one might tasty block....

                  right.... it's going into the old Dakota space? Eater reports full liquor license: http://la.eater.com/archives/2014/01/... !

                  The only thing that burger needed was a glass of beer. I'm still waiting for everyone to upload their Belcampo burger porn....

                  1. re: TonyC

                    I read the same article, so I assume that's where they're going. I'm actually not at all familiar w/ what was in the space before....

                    Question: it seems that this is a meat market (heh) and cafe in one?

                    OH MY GOD SANTA MONICA??? SWEEEEEEET!

                    1. re: Dirtywextraolives

                      From LA Eater: Belcampo Meat Co., which sells its own sustainably raised and processed certified organic meats, is expanding to both Grand Central Market Downtown and Santa Monica. Toddrickallen spots early signage in the old Dakota Lounge space right by Huckleberry on Wilshire Boulevard, with a freshly inked full 47 liquor license connected to the Bay Area meat specialist. Super exciting news for the westside, and the second meat market to come west following newbie A Cut Above. Per this Craigslist post looking for a GM to start in March, Belcampo in Santa Monica should open this spring. Expect a to-go meat menu and dine-in favorites like beef tallow fries and the Belcampo Cheeseburger.

                      1. re: wienermobile

                        as i understand it, the santa monica store will be a pop-up at first (something to do with licensing). it will return in a permanent incarnation this fall.

                    2. re: ilysla

                      With Belcampo, Huckleberry's and Santa Monica Seafood all on one block? The parking is already ridiculous.

                          SMS has a dedicated lot and I've never had problems finding a spot in it.

                          I agree it will get busy, but there is plenty of metered parking on that stretch. And at least SM offers municipal garages to park in for free for like two hours. Unlike my neck of the woods.....

                            Just FYI, Belcampo SM pop up starts tonight, 5-10pm.

                                      Grilled asparagus $14? Don't think I'll be making very many trips to dine there.

                                      1. re: Sam D.

                                        Not cheap by any means, but the ingredients seem to be of high quality (on my one trip there). Fun for a casual night out where you still want something that feels a little special....

                                        1. re: ilysla

                                          How does dining in a pop up type environment of a place that's not really decorated or finished yet feel special?? Special because you're paying $14 for special asparagus? With pork fat & herbs? That price is beyond ridiculous.....

                                          1. re: Dirtywextraolives

                                              Because I like the open-concept dining space + nice-looking bar (even though I don't drink) + waitstaff that actually has some concept of what's actually being served and has been taught about the food *w/o* having to pay an arm and a leg?

                                              The cherry tomatoes they had in the salad were all superb and better than I can generally find at the Farmer's Market.

                                              I didn't have the asparagus, but compare that to, what, $10 for a "panini" at Literati that is tasteless, not actually grilled, served w/ indifference, in an environment that's remarkably cramped.

                                              YMMV.

                                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
                                                Well, I can't speak to Literati.... And for what you describe above, that would apply to most every place in SaMo, and elsewhere in pockets of LA. But still not sure how you justify the price of grilled asparagus at $14 as "not paying an arm and a leg"..... And a green salad with "superb" cherry tomatoes in it and buratta for $13 seems a bit over the top to me as well.... The tomatoes were marinated, btw, and perhaps that is what made them taste superb to you. Anyway, that's a fairly common trick to make otherwise bland vegetables appear to have more flavor and/or extend their shelf life a bit.....
                                                1. re: Dirtywextraolives
                                                  We can continue to go back and forth about this, but I don't think either of us are going to ever get the other poster to "agree."
                                                  I've already stated that I wasn't wowed by the burger as much as everyone else here was, and I generally consider myself fairly sensitive to pricing concerns (I eat salads at Jack-in-Box and California Chicken Cafe multiple times per wk.... More at the former, since I consider the latter to be a pricey for everyday cuisine).
                                                  I do believe that sometimes simply prepared but delicious food does justify a markup for the skilled labor and yrs of training and apprenticeship that went into creating that dish. To certain extent, you get what you pay for, and I can't imagine the rent for a place that large in Santa Monica is going to be cheap. I'm not going to throw a lot of criticism at a place simply for trying to make a profit. It's not like anybody's taking a gun to my head and forcing me to eat there and to pay the bill.
                                                  And if a nice looking space w/ good waitstaff applies to a lot of places in Santa Monica, then, by God, Santa Monica must have lots of relatively nice places to eat (since the food couldn't be horrible in *all* of those places, could it)?
                                                  Have you actually had the food there? If not, then please don't cast aspersions on my statements by putting quotes around my subjective comments. Try the food. And, if you don't like it, criticize as much as you want. But, regardless, please don't tell me what I can and cannot justify in terms of what I choose to spend since all of this (quality of food, high prices, blah, blah, blah) is all a construct. I think the horrific stuff they serve as tacos at Jack-in-the-Box are overpriced at $0.99 b/c I can't even identify any of it as, you know, FOOD, even if it is apparently edible.
                                                  It's my wallet, my taste buds. You do what you please w/ yours. ::shrug::
                                                    Well, pardon me for inquiring about your logic....because that never happens on this board.....
                                                    1. re: Dirtywextraolives
                                                      You inquired about my logic; I think my post explains my thinking process pretty explicitly. And I questioned your logic in criticizing a restaurant simply based on menu prices w/o having actually tried the food.
                                                      By that account, how dare Urasawa, n/naka, or Providence charge so much for... FISH. Especially since some of the dishes don't require any labor aside from simply SLICING it a certain way and then chucking it on a plate. How dare any numerous places steak houses charge so much for... MEAT. Surely the aging process is simply used to hide deficiencies in what must be an inferior piece of beef. And, oh, by the way, I'm making all of these statements even though I haven't eaten at any of these places.
                                                      Kind of curious train of thought, no? But, honestly, that's sort of how your post came across to me.
                                                      The place isn't crowded (yet), it doesn't have loud music blaring, and there's plenty of elbow room even w/ the communal tables (again, maybe b/c it's not crowded). I can hear my partner w/o having either of us having to scream. On top of that, the food is enjoyable.
                                                      It's a surprisingly civilized space to have some (IMO) high-quality food w/o feeling like you have to dress up or having to spend $50pp. And I didn't have to spend a lot of $ on gas to get there or to fight through horrible traffic. To *me*, that's a little bit of a special night out.
                                                      1. re: ilysla
                                                        So now we're not allowed to have an opinion about a place based on looking at the menu & the prices?! Jeez, that's news to me and I guess everyone else on the board best keep their opinions to themselves if they haven't been somewhere....
                                                        I asked how it felt special to you, and you've more than adequately answered it in your voluminous posts, so again, pardon me, and drop it at that.
                                                        1. re: Dirtywextraolives
                                                          ...
                          2. Tried it yesterday. It's great. Really great. Also had an In-N-Out-esque Thousand Island type of sauce as well. Actually liked that the sesame is on both the top & bottom buns - kind of like having 2 top buns, although the meat:bun ratio was slightly heavy towards the latter. But definitely in my new lunch rotation now.
                            1. I may hit this up tomorrow. Looks fantastic.
                              1. Going tomorrow but am seriously tempted by the philly cheesesteak and the riff on said sandwich with goat meat. I guess I would have to post and pics from that visit on a separate thread - right? This one is burgers only?
                                      We all want to know how it compares to the Pann's Patty Melt or the eponymous burger at Golden State or the Morton's prime cheese burger ????????
                                      1. re: kevin
                                        I don't do Morton's, nor do I get the patty melt when at Pann's, but this is another 2 ladder steps above Golden State.
                                        Add another ladder step when you consider the source of beef. No other burger in LA makes you want to scream: "I just ate a happy California cow" right after the last bite.
                                          Well damn, Tony. What am I going to talk about then?
                                          Oh, I know. Believe it or not, I found the patty melt at Pann's woefully underseasoned. I've had it twice, and both times the patty was in desperate need of a shot of salt & pepper before griddling.
                                          As for the fries-less burger (jezus h ross perot...).... I find it.... erm, ... well, .... burger-like.
                                        Cheesesteak was nice and juicy. Reminded me a bit of the Hillstone French Dip but with a cheese sauce. Flavorful but I think the burger appears to be where it is at.
                                    2. Looks much better compared to the crappy burger I had at The Spotted Pig (NYC) last week which was $21 (including a generous portion of disgusting fries).
                                      1. Meat looks good. My taste is a lighter bun or less bun. Gotta try it. Good report. Maybe something at GCM will live up to the hype!
                                            Problem is I'd rather have a mediocre cheese burger than great eggs, unless they come from a sturgeon. But what do u get there?
                                        2. The burger is great. but for the love of god, don't pass up the fries -- fried in beef tallow. perfect. I've tasted both cheesesteaks and they are both good. I was skepteical of how the traditional would work when made with good meat instead of shaved frozen junk, but it is still recognizably philly, though better. With belcampo, sticky rice, tacos a tomas, DTLA cheese, and horsethief, the market is really hopping.
                                            I like the fries, but they're still single-fry. So they're basically an amped-up version of the ones you'd find at In-N-Out - still a bit limp.
                                                not a fan of in'n'out fries either. but that shouldn't make you stay away from the belcampo version. the one's i had were suitably if not perfectly crisp and the flavor was terrific. if they're not double-cooking, they're at least blanching and there's not of that horrible raw potato flavor.
                                                        I'll answer. Just had lunch-- my first Fatburber in years, and it's definitely worth the few dollars more. It's a more substantial burger, with what looks like a hand formed patty. It looked as beautiful as its picture on the tray advertisement (which can be said for In-N-Out as well).
                                                        I don't have a problem with In-N-Out-- I respect the company for providing a higher-than-minimum wage, and for keeping their prices more or less in line with inflation for 70 years. (Though personally, I could do without the Jesus-- but it's certainly not stopping me from being an occasional customer.)
                                                  from the cooks -- the fries are oil-blanched in the morning and then fired again just before service. They're definitely double-cooked, but they say they have had problems with go-orders getting limp and they're working on it.
                                                3. OK, I finally went (food porn will be posted later).
                                                  This burger is awesome. It's airy (I know, a very strange word to describe the first impression on a burger, but TonyC is right: It's packed on the loose side), but DAMN! It retains all that burger-y goodness in its bite and taste. The caramelized onions and lettuce add nicely to the whole experience.
                                                  The bun at Belcampo ranks second only to Golden State's. The Thousand Island-esque sauce is very sparingly used.
                                                  I tried the beef tallow fries. It was OK, but a bit on the limp side.
                                                  Other standouts include the split pea soup, made with pork stock. The rich pork stock hits the palate on the first sip. I've never had a split pea soup this "complex" (yes, this term is over-used; deal with it) before. It is chock full (and I mean FULL) of ham. If anything, the only tinkering would be to ask the folks at Belcampo to ease down on the ham in that soup.
                                                  The twice-cooked duck bun was ordered, but the duck was just a few seconds away from becoming charcoal on mine. I will admit it was my bad to expect a Momofuku-esque bun in the first place.
                                                  To recap: Eat the burger at Belcampo.
                                                        So why not go to Golden State, where by your own admission the bun is better, and you spend the same bucks but also get a generous side?
                                                                        The cheesesteak was very good and reminded me of a Houston's French Dip. However, I was craving more of a steak sandwich like the one done at Carnevino in LV - which has thicker cut steak slices and to be fair is not a "Philly" cheesesteak.
                                                                        I went back to Belcampo today, with wife and kid in tow, and had the burger. Very nice indeed and it definitely satisfied the burger yearns.
                                                                        On a side note, I saw that Olio is now open. I didn't know it had started serving already but it seemed to be full swing.
                                                                      indeed the aioli was very good. it made up for the soggy bottom fries. the meatball sandwich was fantastic as well but lacks the overall sexiness of the burger.
                                                                      1. re: TonyC
Grand Central Market has always been bustling... but this afternoon it was packed in a way I never seen. Not overwhelming but with a hum that was glorious. EVERYONE was busy and ready too put their best foot forward. Even the Chinese food place seemed to taking up a notch!!
                                                                          Belacampo though, was setting the standard. They had plenty of staff to service the butcher case. Two registers to handle the orders. They mistakenly messed up one of my orders, and when I pointed it out, they apologized and got it fixed FAST. When the meat counter was not busy, the staff came over the eating counter to talk to the patrons, talking to them about their meals, exchanging info about the company and recipe tips. Even when there was a complaint, they took it graciously.
                                                                          I came with a Latino family who was huffing about 'changes they had heard of'. I spied them later happily eating a big bowls of noodle soups chatting up like nothing at all had changed. :)
                                                                          Now to the food. The burger was very good. Really, elemental. Well flavored meat, cooked properly to order (I ordered rate and it indeed was) and it had just enough spread and just enough cheese to add interest. The bun was PHENOMINAL. Just the ideal bun in so many ways.... Even the final bite with that bun and some meat was wonderful... However, I guess i like a more precious burger. I still think the Father's Office burger is my favorite.
                                                                          http://imgur.com/uc3BW5d
                                                                          I also got some stuff to go as P. could not come with me on this trip and I promised him a Belcampo meal...
                                                                          At home, I had a little bag of fritos I had swiped from a community council meeting... so I had to order the Chili. Overall, it was a very meaty (ground beef) but beefy chili. It definitely improved with the addition of fritos, but it's in no way the amazing chili and frito experience that is at Home State.
                                                                          http://imgur.com/uc3BW5d
They were really good. We still prefer the Lets Be Frank dogs and even boars head has a bit more balanced flavor because these were a bit TOO smokey... Still, they were a an excellent accompaniment with the 'strong' irish mustard and neon relish...
                                                                                1. re: Johnny L
It's a wonderful burger, cooked to a perfect medium rare with a lightness that a lot of other burgers don't achieve. The meat itself is beefy and flavorful and the sharp cheddar contrasts really well. The bun is great, but seems to be too big for the patty. The fries were wonderful, crisp and delicious. I did not experience sogginess or flashbacks to in n out.
                                                                                            My biggest complaint is probably just how small and light the thing is. I ate half of it before I even realized.
                                                                                            Still, a great burger.
                                                                                              Well, that was my experience, anyways.
                                                                                                This is why this burger is a bit magical. The moderately airy (though not doughy/weighty after fondling) bun and the "fluffy" patty give the illusion that the entire entity is lightweight, when in reality, it's a solid 1/3 lb burger. Certainly it ain't quite Hawkins, but that kind of blatant food waste brings no joy to me.
                                                                                                This In-n-Out soggy fries push back is a bit odd. Order it well done and it comes out... crispy? I suppose they are divisive fries.
                                                                                                            The cheese is an excellent cheddar, if I'm not mistaken. Totally added to the experience while never taking over the show.
                                                                                                            This is a pretty spartan burger as is, but if you want to go meat, bun, and nothing else, that would be great, too.
                                                                                                            Tony C likened it to a steakhouse burger. To me, it's more of a lunch counter burger done at the highest level. It's not killing you with a ton of beef. It's enough to satisfy because the flavor and texture are just so good.
                                                                                                            For $12.50, you might want some fancy bacon or french cheese or a housemade slaw. That stuff would totally screw up this burger. It's perfect as is and worth every penny.
                                                                                                        2. It sounds like this is going to be the burger of the past decade.
                                                                                                          Beating out golden state, office, the hungry cat, connie and ted's, etc.
Here it is, medium sans lettuce. It really shines in its simplicity. It's also more substantial than I thought that it would be. Shared a side of Jowl Bacon as well which was quite good.
Belcampo seems to have consistent ppl ordering to go or sitting at the counter but there never seemed to be a long line of people waiting, I was there around 12:30-1pm on Sunday.
                                                                                                                                    Belcampo's restaurant side, as I understand it, is there to cook and sell meat that didn't sell from the butcher counter. I like that kind of thinking very much, even though it means that a run on Comfort Meats during a chilly week could mean a shortage of them for the equally comfort-seeking diners. I don't know how many goats they slaughter in a week, but there's obviously a market for it, as witness that story about their first customer being a woman who bought a whole goat head!
                                                                                                                                    1. re: BacoMan
I think it's the best burger I've had in LA. Such a nice soft pack and great flavor. I opted for no cheese, but included the jowl bacon, which was thick, chewy AND crispy. I ordered it medium and it was bright pink, not red, throughout. Perfect, IMHO. Also had the broccolini as a side, which was very good. Had quite a few of my pal's fries, which were good, but not awe inspiring. Got 2 seats at the counter at noon, with very little wait. Can't wait to go back to try the meatball sub and the Marrakech cheese steak, made with goat leg.
                                                                                                                                  1. I tried the burger today, after unsuccessfully trying to order it the first week they opened (long story not worth repeating - however management handled it extremely well).
                                                                                                                                    Fries are fine - unfortunately, the ketchup has cloves in it which is, IMO, a cardinal sin. Give me Heinz - it has never been improved upon, despite many chefs heroic efforts.
                                                                                                                                    The burger is good, but maybe its just me - for $25 (burger, fries, coke +tax&tip) it's just not 400% better than in-n-out. I'll spend that much if I'm sitting on a patio overlooking the pacific or in a swanky hotel...but not in GCM!
And I adore cheeseburgers, as I will travel far & wide for really good ones, and I love trashy ones too....
With the gas prices what they are now($4.39 for 87??) and parking on top of it... Is a burger, fries and not even alcohol, gonna be worth $25???? I don't know, but now with teenage (or pretty close to) kids, that money is better spent elsewhere for me...
I take the Culver City Expo line then Red Line to the market frequently. Have a meal at the market, walk around downtown go to some galleries, poke around in shops. There's the Last Bookstore. Plenty of things to do. Go back to market if it works out and have some other snacks or snack elsewhere around downtown. Can always hop on other lines to go to Little Tokyo or Chinatown.
                                                                                                                                        Hop back on the train to go back to westside. No traffic or parking hassles or cost. Explore the area. It's a great experience. Spend a day exploring for the low cost of $5.
                                                                                                                                        It's a completely different experience than staying in a car and avoiding city life.
                                                                                                                                          PS - I love the Last Bookstore, I could spend hours in there....
Those new cars will be starting to come on line in 2016
Upside- it's closer, and you can get a slice of their utterly magnificent banana cream pie with it. Downside: the burger.
                                                                                                                                                      And it's more like a 30 spot these days for a burger, fries, pie and soda with tip or even before, what with an apple pie garnering 6.25 before the addition of ice cream for another 2 bucks. Makes you wistful for some two buck chuck.
Chefs are trying way too hard by adding cloves or even worse that disgusting Umami ketchup. If it ain't broke, it doesn't need fixing.
But that Belcampo ketchup is way too heavy handed with them. It really is a clove sauce. Thing is, the fries at Belcampo suck so to me it's a moot point.
                                                                                                                                                  Umami's ketchup is an affront. An aggressive insult. As is their over-reliance on imitation truffle oil.
                                                                                                                                                  $12.5+tip/tax, drink water, no fries, free validated parking. The burger stands alone, but comes with free view of the meat case.
The idea that value is a linear quantity is a false premise. Expecting quality to jump arithmetically with an increase in price is a great way to be disappointed with all but the best values in town. Forget fine dining, mid-range dining would be sure to disappoint.
                                                                                                                                                          The burger absolutely stands alone, but if you must get a side then just get one of the sandwiches they offer in bun form. $5 and a world better than the mediocre fries.
                                                                                                                                                            Certainly it's a "better" burger, but ultimately food comes down to how you feel afterwards...was it worth it and how do you feel when you pay the tab?
                                                                                                                                                            On that count, Belcampo fails, IMHO.
Of course they aren't 1/3 pound … but they're certainly big enough for the money.
But I never do understand the value math some people buy into. Value is just not linear, though it can act that way at low price points.
                                                                                                                                                                Belcampo's burger is totally worth the extra $$$ for me at least.
                                                                                                                                                                Quality is much higher than 4X. To me, flavor is, too. Perhaps overall experience isn't though.
                                                                                                                                                                Anyway, respect to both you and manku. I just hold a different POV.
Perhaps inspired by Belcampo, I noted that A Cut Above was offering its own take on a hamburger today/ While curious, I did not wind up trying the burger as I was seduced by a different special, Italian Beef with giardiniera (available wet or dry).
I had it "wet" and thought that the giardiniera (sweet peppers) was good, albeit a bit heavy on the vinegar--I noted a similar predominance of the vinegar in the otherwise good pastrami reuben I had at ACA on a prior visit. I like the fact that they keep trying new sandwiches and hope they will start offering some of their sausages as sandwiches one day.
Also, I finally tried the cheeseburger after several intervening visits where other sandwiches drew me away from it. While not as good as the Belcampo beast, it was a well-constructed and delicious 1/2 pounder with sauteed onions, nice pickle spears and tomatoes on a decent bun.
                                                                                                                                                                1. re: New Trial
It fell apart on me. :( But the pattie had a good flavor, a bit more beefy than the Belcampo, but I liked the spread and onions. It was more on the fancy burger spectrum than Belcampo...
                                                                                                                                                            3. Went to GMC again this afternoon and stopped at Belcampo. We had the Belcampo Cheeseburger mid-rare (it was bloody as hell, delicious) the Marrakesh Cheesesteak and also tried the fries.
                                                                                                                                                              The burger was once again, crazy good. Nice and bloody this time. Juicy irony flavor. It’s hard to tell the difference between the patty and the bun in the pic. There must have been an extra dose of those onions on mine, cause they really jumped right out at me this time.
                                                                                                                                                              The cheesesteak was decent. Not as “goat-y” as I was hoping, but still delicious. I think maybe the harrissa aioli and bell peppers may have dominated a bit more than necessary, exerting a spicy vegetal tang that cancelled out the “goat-y” funk. The bread was fantastic.
                                                                                                                                                              The fries were ok. A nice side with the burger, as one always need fries with a burger, but they don’t really hold up on they’re own. They’re cut fairly thin, but the crispiest parts seem to be the cuts from the end.
                                                                                                                                                              Extra – also went to HT and ate ridiculously well. Seriously. I guess I don’t understand the dislike.
Ergonomic data for seating is widely available even for picnic tables. That seating area was more comfortable with better overhead before Horse Thief when food was served thru a window or brought to you and seating was open to all patrons of Grand Central. If HT gets their beer license and permission to stay open late they might draw customers from La Cita the bar just South of them. Presently their seating is grossly underutilized.
Lazy Ox is going to shutter sooner than later. Spring Street Tavern's renditions are nice, but nothing earth shattering. So I'm wondering what other DTLA burger option is there?
                                                                                                                                                                                                  12.5 plus what (?) 4 bucks for fries at belcamp and that's a 50c difference.
But agree that at $12 a half pound, it is mighty expensive compared to other highly touted brisket places such as smoke city and Bludso's. I don't think the quality is worth the large up charge even for the ease of getting there for me compared to the other two places.
But Belcampo has a really good order system, so things come and out in a good clip.
                                                                                                                                                                                        And yeah, Eggslut has the longest lines BY FAR. But last couple of weeks it has been moving along very fast. I'd say they and Tacos Tumbras a Tomas are the only 2 places that would have double-digit of people in queue (and Horse Thief on occasion).
                                                                                                                                                                                        On another note, may I say that I really enjoy HT? I've been going to GCM at least twice a week in the past month for lunch, and it's been good every time I've had them. Just make sure to get the brisket moist by request.
At the end of the day it's just well-executed breakfast sandwiches and simple egg-centric (egg-cellent?) dishes. Not sure if it's worth treking to GCM and fighting the even bigger lines and parking s**tshow on the weekends, unless you go closer to closing. You can always make it a GCM crawl (I did it once).
There always is a 4 person deepline at Tacos Tomas but now that the pizza place creates a wall defining the aisle becomes completely blocked. Easier to choose another path. Egg slut had all their seats full. The Deli must be on the verge of opening. Looked like a confer within the Deli area.
                                                                                                                                                                                                    I'd think if I wandered in to a "pop up" and saw a wall filled with the logo and branding of the restaurant that I'd crossed the line from "pop up" to, well, an actual restaurant.
                                                                                                                                                                                                    I thought the whole concept of a "pop up" was that a guest was working in someone else's kitchen for a night or two? Or hell, pop a yatai style tent up on the side of the road, in between the illegal taco table and bacon-wrapped-hot dog cooking on a shopping cart griddle. That says "pop up" to me.
                                                                                                                                                                                                          I was genuinely curious. Since I don't closely follow these kinds of hype-driven food trends, the last time I read anything about "pop ups" was when Starry Kitchen was popping up in someone else's backyard, before getting their own place. Now a "pop up" is a full-fledged restaurant with slick corporate-looking branding? Or can it be whatever you want it to be, as long as it doesn't have a lease longer than... well, than what? What's the lease limit to still be considered a "pop up"? I'd say that once you have a lease, you've officially popped in.
                                                                                                                                                                                                          In any case, the logical leap one has to make to consider both Starry Kitchen and Belcampo Meat Co. "pop ups" is confusing to me. Perhaps those who have paid attention all this time, and been led gently down the pathway of the continually evolving definition, would be less jarred by the transition.
The chef from Freddy Smalls did a "pop-up", no waiters, no frills, just an excellent cheesesteak. Granted, no Freddy Smalls signage, but they are/were leasing the property. I thought I would throw this into the discussion.
                                                                                                                                                                                                              That chef has since left, so I don't know the status of that place, whether it will be a second FS or what.
I had to give Mr. Taster a bit of a hard time. He''s one of my all-time favorite posters (or used to be when he talked more about food and spent less time yelling at hipsters on his proverbial lawn).
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Pop-up was the writer's term. Nowhere on Belcampo's site or menus do they call it that. They call it a preview in all instances.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  To me it doesn't matter much though. The site has always been about food and flavor over hype and trends. And that cuts both ways.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Of course, one has to actually eat the food to evaluate flavor.                                                                                                                                                                                                                   the chili and fries i thought were disappointing. "Beef Tallow Fries" turned out to be limp and soggy, and didn't really taste that great. the chili sounded like it was made with great ingredients (they own their own butcher / meat source) but taste-wise, it was really so-so for me.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                  if i'm ever in downtown during lunch i'd be glad to return for the burger though, and maybe try their lamb next time. thanx!
Thought I saw a mention, but can't seem to find it now.... What's the decent Mexican spot in GCM? My friend is staying downtown and she may want to try our Mexican food instead of another burger place.... TIA!
I mean, it's a burger so I'd manage expectations accordingly, but saying that it's one of the best ones in the city.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Absolutely outstanding quality beef, with that beefy tang to it. Perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly as desired.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                        And I quite enjoyed the fries, though I almost didn't order them. I cannot stand In-N-Out fries, and found these far superior. Again, seasoned well (i.e. Salted) and they were not at all limp.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                        I mean, they ARE thinly cut, so I cannot imagine them traveling well. But to order, which is what I think ours were as they seemed fresh out of the fryer.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                        My only complaint was the disinterested female working the counter. Seemed a bit of a space cadet.
See other thread photos for greater accuracy)
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              See the note in my original post; I took a "photo on the fly", didn't check it, and when I looked later realized the lighting sucked and the focus was on the fries, which makes the meat look so much more done than it was.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              FWIW, ordered Med, so it would naturally look more done than the original photo, but there was a nice line of pink running through it, which you cannot tell from the photo.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              1. re: a213b
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              You must have eaten at the same time I was there on Tuesday because I noticed the same thing about the server! She seemed very out of it. Maybe an off day for her.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              I got the burger Med-rare and it was PERFECT. The best burger of 2014 for me. I love that it was juicy and airy without the disgusting falling-apart-from-grease texture some of the higher end burger joints (*cough* umami) are serving.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              I also like that things like the cheese and sauce really highlighted the meat instead of overpowering it. One nitpick for me is that I like the cheese below the patty instead of on top so that it's the first thing my tongue touches, but that may just be a weird thing I have with cheeseburgers. Yes, I know I can just turn the burger upside down.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                              On a separate note: the fried broccoli rabe thing was FANTASTIC. I didn't miss the fries at all after ordering the broccoli rabe.
I ended up with a Philly cheesesteak instead of the Marrakesh version with goat. I absentmindedly took a bite before it could register.
Perfectly cooked, beefy, tangy, mineral-y goodness.
That wouldn't necessarily translate into making a great veggie burger, though perhaps it could if they applied the same attention to detail and quality of ingredients to it...
I never have to drive, again - especially when you factor in everything else on the corner of Wilshire and 11th.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    * Wexler's Deli's Pastrami was ~so-so. Langer's is much more enjoyable in every way. Bread was awful.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    * Horse Thief Brisket was mediocre: Bludso's blows it away. We ordered the 1/2 pound ala carte to get a better sampling: 1 "slice" was very fatty and moist. 1 slice was super dry; chunky; I had to spit it out. Last slice of Brisket was dryish with some fat. Lack of smoke compared to Bludso's as well.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    * Belcampo Burger: Good beefy flavor, but it's a super thin patty, and they cooked it Medium Well :< ... when we asked for Medium Rare. Awful. The bun and components were just a bit too sweet. Definitely like Golden State and Father's Office and Morton's and a few other burgers better than this.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Highlight of the trip? Good Carnitas at one random stall we tried. :>
They also do goat and I ALWAYS get their Pineapple Agua Fresca. Much tastier than that stuff by Press Bros.
When I go I always order the Chicken and Ribs (Or pulled pork if they are out of ribs) and have always been more than pleased...
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        yah for the other stuff (Wexler, Belcampo, Horse Thief), we just felt they were trying for quality for sure, but not as good as other places around the city like Langers, Bludsos, etc. if i was in the area for lunch, for sure i'd be glad to revisit.
It was *so* much more tender, and *so* much more juicy, by an exponential factor. Crazy good.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The problem is that Bludo is an artist. I don't think Bludo's LB will ever get to that level.
It doesn't really hold up to Father's Office at all, and the beef at Golden State seems to be just as flavorful.
It wasn't bad, but it just didn't do anything for me. Best part of my FO meal was the chocolate stout beer float.
But I'm kind of over every high-end burger getting tarted up with an overload of ingredients. FO makes a great burger, but a number of places are operating in that idiom now.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      What makes Belcampo great is summarized nicely by what Dommy said upthread: it's elemental.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The flavor of the beef at Belcampo is superior to Golden State, in my opinion. But that's not even it. It's the texture. A coarse grind and perfect pack. The texture is unbeatable.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      That said, not everyone appreciates something so simple done so right. Hell, I'm still going to Pono. Sometimes I do want something a little more layered. In the end, Belcampo is offering just a very straightforward cheeseburger. It's also just perfect.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      1. re: cacio e pepe
There was something distinctly sweetish about the flavor....
That would make more sense to me.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Other than "cloves in the ketchup", as mentioned above, I haven't found any flavors of baking spices in their burgers at all. Interesting.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                1. re: Servorg
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The sweet/spicy flavor would be odd in bun, too. But I can't really say b/c I didn't try the bun by itself.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  It wasn't the ketchup, since I *did* try that by itself (at least, the side of ketchup they serve w/ the fries). Although, truth be told, I didn't have a huge amount of it since I don't generally like ketchup (although I found their homemade version superior to the Heinz).
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I tried some patty by itself, but it's so thin (and my bite was too small, since I only wanted to have a little patty by itself) that I couldn't detect much flavor one way or another (including beef flavor, truth be told).
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I also realize that I mis-wrote an observation in the other thread (that the flavor was *not* detectable in every bite but was frequent enough).
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I specifically commented to the waitress that there was an unusual flavor in the burger. She nodded and then said that they using "baking spices," including "cloves." Her terms, not mine. She didn't comment whether it was in the bun, ketchup, or beef, so.... Does the burger come w/ ketchup (which is a rather horrifying thought, IMHO)? If so, perhaps there was enough on the bun that I was able to detect it w/ the bigger bites I was taking?
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I should also note that I'm *very* sensitive to anything that's remotely sweet, so perhaps most people wouldn't have noticed. But I must also admit that, texture aside (which is needed perfect), a part of me wondered if/what they were trying to mask w/ this unusual flavor.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Again, I really couldn't taste much beef, and I blame that on how thin the patty was (Novelli, my patty must've been half the thickness of the one you pictured).... My medium rare also wasn't medium rare (IMO), and they got our orders wrong (my partner ordered medium, I think, and they both came out w/ "Medium Rare" flags). I don't cook much, but, given how thin our patties were, I don't really see how "medium rare" would've been technically possible w/o also leaving the outer portion also rare since the patty was so thin!
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            2. re: SMBeetle
Not a whiff.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              There was sweetness from the onions. A touch of sweetness from the bun, but not too much.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              I do think we might be encountering a quality control issue, perhaps due to the main cooks heading over to man the SF location? Don't know.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              But thin patties (it's 1/3#), cooked to the wrong temperature just really doesn't sound anything like what I had or what is pictured in this thread.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Too bad, if that's the case.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Not that kind of sweetness. It was a spicy/sweetness (like cinnamon.... but in terms of the actual flavor but in terms of the combo of spicy and sweet).
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The patty I had bared little resemblance to what is pictured (except for the photo w/ a really thin patty). Each half of the bun and the lettuce were thicker (the bun considerably so) than the patty I had.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Frankly, I was a little disappointed w/ the burger, but there was enough that was "right" w/ the place that I'd be willing to try it again. I don't mind paying $12 for a good burger. And, even w/ the flaws, it was still worth the price simply based on the quality of the ingredients alone.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                I think I'll try it again in a few months, when they have more of their act together....
Live on the Westside, work in the Valley, so heading out to Downtown is not, er, easy. And my partner and I have gorged on so much food recently (unrelated to Belcampo), that we need a bit of a break! ;)
But I think I'm also pickier than he is. ;)
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        I kinda wanted to ask about the burger the in Belcampo SM thread, but didn't... This all seems a bit.. conspiracy theorist to me though.
If anything other than S+P was used, then it was in good balance, and I didn't notice it. What I got was a savory, juicy, meaty, perfectly cooked burger, and every bite was delicious.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          But the SM location is in sort of a trial-run phase, so maybe they chose to experiment with flavors. Who knows? I think we should all try both locations again and compare; most of us agree it's good at GCM and SM, so there's not too much to lose.
I doubt my patty was any thicker than 3/4 of the one pictured in the OP's post. And whatever flavor the beef had was masked by the spices they used. When I spend that much on a burger, I want to be able to taste the beef very clearly, and I simply couldn't.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              3. I am really surprised to read a couple recent replies on this thread saying that the Belcampo patty was "thin." As reflected in my photo in my post above, which is very similar to OP's photo, the burger was not at all thin. And texture and taste-wise, I definitely preferred it to Father's Office. I haven't eaten it at the SM location yet, but I stopped in there this weekend to have a look-see. Nice bar, though it will be totally different when it re-opens post-renovation this fall. It is closing for the renovation about May 24, if I recall what the gal told me. The bar is going to be on the opposite side of the space from where it now is; I told her they need to put a TV in. I also told her the fries at GCM weren't that great (kinda' limp), and she said they've been very crispy at the SM location. Need too check it out.
Went by Tuesday night and ate at the bar. Had to try the cheeseburger after seeing this thread. I LOVED IT! I did notice the unusual taste and asked them what the spice was, and the waiter brought me a little of the ketchup to sample. He said it was a mix of spices that included cloves, nutmeg, etc. For me, it had a slight suggestion of a very light barbecue sauce but I was completely enamored from the first bite. I live even closer to Father's Office, went there once when they first opened. I really am not a fan of the FO burger--all the blue cheese is way too salty for me (almost inedible actually). Anyway, Belcampo burger is just the right size--not too thin (unlike the really appalling thin greasy truffle burger I had once at the SM Umami Burger). If I weren't concerned about my cholesterol issues, I would be back for another burger at Belcampo before the week is up.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  I did sub a small salad (delicious dressing) for the "tallow fries". They looked fabulous gotta say. At SM Belcampo burger and tallow fries is $16.50. Tried a buttermilk panna cotta for dessert (their other dessert was a creampuff with chocolate).
I'm not much of a drinker, so didn't sample.
They told me in the fall the menu will be much bigger and that as Wayno said, everything will be completely different. They have to be open for a month to be grandfathered in as a restaurant for SM zoning purposes. (SM Seafood down the street had to do the same thing before they opened permanently.)
I especially enjoy their mcdonald's cheeseburger homage. It proves there are "good" chains (think: pitfire, tender greens, etc.)
I didn't take a photo but the meat, rare in middle, didn't look too dissimilar from your "spank bank" material Tony (hold the special sauce). Fries pretty decent too, tho I'm not a big fan of parsley and stuff like that on them, not that you taste it, but, just saying.
But hey, for you Pono is far. For me, everything else in the city is like Trail of Tears far.
Anybody try Stout burger yet? Was wondering how it compared to Pono & BL.
Pono / BL both use grass fed beef.
About as good as Umami, if you like the puffy, beer-battered ones rather than the crumbly breaded ones.
Just tried the burger at the Santa Monica location this week [$16.50 with fries] and was quite pleased with it. Good, clean taste and balance. The fries were good but not as crisp as I like. The house ketchup was not to my taste (I think that is where the clove flavor another poster complained might actually have come into play). The duck bun (really a slider) was tasty though the hoisin sauce had an odd additional flavor I could not quite place. The beef fritters (really more croquettes) were very good, with the filling made with bicep. Service was friendly and competent. Looking forward to seeing the full menu when they reopen--I am hoping the goat cheesesteak sandwich makes an appearance.
Sorry to disagree with most of you. My wife and I had the Belcampo cheeseburger yesterday. I ordered it medium rare and my wife ordered her medium--they both came exactly the same--medium- although mine was marked "M/R" on the wrapper; in fact I would say they were medium on the well side. As for the taste experience--much too sweet for us--caused by whatever they put in the grilled onions; the rest of the sandwich was ok, but not worth the price and the crowd. As for their butcher's counter--the prices are outrageous.
