So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish Tacos

Hi all,

I'm writing to let everyone know that my last day working at CHOW will be March 27th. I'm embarking on a career change, which means you won't be seeing any more Site Talk posts from me after this week. My goal is to become a middle school teacher! I'll still be in the Bay Area, and I still like to cook, so this certainly isn't a goodbye from Chowhound.

I have had a great two years working here and it has been fun getting to know members of this community. I really admire how passionate Chowhounds are about food, and about this site. For my parting words on Site Talk, I offer this advice to anyone reading:

1) Appreciate the good stuff. Chowhound discussions can sometimes be negative, particularly on Site Talk, but I think most people reading this would agree that overall, this is a pretty awesome site. And it's awesome because of the people who contribute. Don't take this for granted.

2) Don't stop discovering great food. Though the site has evolved in the past fifteen years, my favorite thing about Chowhound since the beginning is that it's a place to talk about new discoveries. It's a place I turn to when I want to discover something new (whether a recipe idea or a place to eat), and it's also a place I come post to when I make a new discovery of my own. The people I appreciate the most on this site are those out trying new places, testing new recipes, and embarking on new projects, and then coming back to tell others about them.

3) Keep being nice. Despite the occasional conflicts, this community is one of the friendliest I've seen on the Internet. If everyone leads by example, we can hopefully keep this up.

I think that's about all for now. Thanks again to this great community for always keeping my job interesting, and I'll see you on the boards!

Dave MP

I assume Dave will have an amply supply of #2 pencils, magic markers, and duct tape.

        1. re: Veggo

Duct tape? What kind of special treatment do you get from the mods Veggo? Geeze no wonder you are always looking for trouble!

      2. Keep on keepin' on posting, Dave.

        1. Good luck with your teaching career! I'm guessing that moderating this site was a good start... Thanks for your time, as unappreciated as you might have felt at time, another skill that will help w/ middle schoolers).

          1. LOL. Love the Hitchhiker's reference. Maybe meet you at the restaurant at the end of the universe for lunch. Good luck.

            1. Best of luck to you, Dave. I wish more people, esp. men, would turn to teaching. Congratulations.

              1. well, if you're hoping for a respite from our back-biting, name-calling, and cliques you're probably better off in middle school than the corporate office world but it will only be a little better than here. my sister, niece and nephew teach and love it. sure it has it's own set of headaches, but one I doubt they'd trade for a different grouping. it's a noble and important profession. (uhh but do remember that most school districts don't allow spanking any more).

                to new adventures!

                1. Oh no . . . April 1 is coming! Who is going to establish this year's version of the Banana Board?

Seriously, best of luck in your new career and thanks for all the insight you have provided over the years.

omg how could i have forgotten the banana board so quickly!!???!! ;)

                  2. Good luck, Dave! I have a middle schooler and indeed they are complex, bright, and often irritating creatures. You'll have fun and tear your hair out.

                    1. Congratulations on the new career! I hope to continue reading your writing, and await the creation of a middle school cafeteria board :-)

BTW, epic title for the post!

that would be cool, sorta Jamie Oliver in the real and not pre-arranged trenches.

                      2. Echoing all the others, you've often been the only sane voice in the morass! Thanks for your time and talent.

Spend a little time looking for Teaching Boards -- you'll need a CH-like outlet where you can share your classroom and school trials, triumphs, and tales.

                        Best of luck.

Grab a copy of Harry Wong's The First Day of School, but carry a salt shaker : )
I'm sure your time at CH has equipped you with the knowledge of which fleur de sel goes best with MS students.

                        1. I have been quite happy having you here on Chowhound, and recall you have offered a number of innovative ideas. I will likely miss you as much as I miss James Norton, which is a whole lot. Thanks for your contributions!

                          1. keep on truckin'

                            1. Fare thee well.

                              1. Good luck Dave, and thanks for everything.

                                1. Hi, Dave,

Best wishes in your new endeavor. Chowhound's loss is a very real gain for our kids. I personally have always appreciated your respectful and knowledgeable contributions both on the Boston board and here. As a member of chowhound, I am sad to see you go, but as an educator and a mother, I'm thrilled to have someone of your caliber working with our vulnerable kids as they navigate the wonderful and confusing early teen years.

                                  Please keep posting!

                                  1. Buona fortuna, David. Your students are very lucky to have you, and they will know it very quickly.

                                    1. Good luck to you. Our schools need good teachers!

                                        1. Just seeing this now - good luck to you, Dave MP! You are taking on the toughest of the tough - Middle Schoolers! Then again, if you can wrangle us, you can deal with 7th and 8th graders.

                                          1. I'm glad you'll still be posting, even if not here. Your contributions have not gone unnoticed.

And don't listen to the naysayers about your new vocation. There is nothing wrong with pursuing the masochistic lifestyle.

                                            1. Happy Trails! The kids will be lucky to have you. I hope you find a way to work good food and good humor into your curriculum!

                                              1. MIddle school teacher? Can't you just stick yourself in the eye with a sharp stick instead? Much less painful and it's over faster. ;-)

Seriously, happy career trails to you.

Having lived on both sides of the Mason-Dixon, I could do translation for you....:)

                                                  2. My sister taught 7th and 8th grade science for many years. She loved it. I'm sure you will too.

As others have pointed out, you have a great basis for handling teens of today. Thankfully teenagers are more transparent than this group. You should have few problems.

                                                    Your talents will be missed.

Best of luck. See you at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe - and on the boards.

                                                      1. Hi, Dave:

I hate to ping you after your "retirement", but the oddest thing just happened this morning.

At 10:59 PDT, someone posted here on Site Talk about major bloodletting at Chow, to the effect that nearly all the Chow staff had been fired. The thread was ripped down within an hour, naturally, which frankly lends credence to the contents.

Any connection between your leaving and an "after-hours knife fight"?

                                                        Aloha,
                                                        Kaleo

                                                        1. Is this a message of doom? "So long, and thanks for all the fish" is what the dolphins said to us humans as they left right before the Earth was destroyed.

I agree that Earth is being destroyed, but the Miami Dolphins got out?

Seriously, who will read us the Last Message: "We apologise for the inconvenience."

No, *seriously*, Blood Moon is tonight...
