Food-Festival-Wise, when's the best time to go to Austin?

I've always wanted to go to Austin, especially as its reputation as a foodie destination only continues to grow. So, I'm making it my main mission to head to Austin before this year is over.

Just curious, are there any food festivals in Austin where it may be a good time to visit? I'm looking to head over there around early fall (September - October). Also, this'll probably be a solo trip.

Any advice is appreciated!

  1. While not a festival, Austin Restaurant Week allows you to try some of the nicer places at a discounted rate (and limited menu) while donating to charity.

Many of the ARW "deals" aren't really deals at all...

It depends. It's also for a good cause though.

    2. personally I would skip the festivals as that tends to be chefs cooking in a mobile kitchen for larger crowds.

September - October should be a great time as the heat will have died down which makes both outdoor dining and waiting in line at some establishments more bearable.

I would much rather try to avoid the festival times : SXSW, Austin City Limits, Food festivals, and rather go during a less busy time.

Restaurants always put their best foot forward when business is relatively slower.

In that vein, its probably better to go during unpopular restaurant days like tuesdays and wednesdays.

      1. The Texas Monthly BBQ Fest is a good way to sample lots of Texas' (and hence the world's) best barbecue. It's usually in November and tickets sell out fast, so get on their twitter feed if you are interested.
