Request for mini reports week ending March 23

Last week seemed to get a good response so let's try this again. Please post brief reports (or make them as long as you want) for the past week or so. This is not to discourage longer reports that are their own threads, but rather to encourage shorter reports so we'll get more of them and get them more frequently. If people like this format maybe we can make this a weekly thing. I'd love to hear about food experiences for both new and established places.

Please include locations along with the names. I'll post mine later.

  1. Ok I'll start.

    Caribbean Corner, the tiny basement Jamaican spot in old town Fairfax. They do a nice rice and peas here with a very short grain rice, moist and delicious. I ordered oxtail which was not as good as I'm used to. It comes out as thin, tough slices. Like a lot of places, patties are just not as good as the frozen ones in the markets.

      Been trying to get there ever since your positive report a few months ago. Went once too late and it was closed.

        If you want to have otherworldly great Jamaican food, you need to get over to Pimento Grill in far SE DC. Go for the oxtail brown stew and the chicken curry. Always order the rice and peas and the cabbage. Also the homemade juices. As good a meal as there is in Washington, DC. You can always combine it with a trip to the Frederick Douglass House if you need an excuse.

          The patties are atrocious, no better than 7-11 patties. The oxtail stew didn't contain much oxtail - but that might be because oxtail prices are now between $6-$7 a pound.

            No, the 7-11 patties are much better. In fact, I am not sure I have ever had a 'homemade' pattie in this area as good as the 7-11 version. The Global Brand patties in the supermarkets (they are hard to find) are really good started in the microwave and finished in a toaster.

            Fun fact: Any 7-11 will make 'fresh' patties if you ask. Takes about 2 minutes.

        3. I'll bite. Was in town for the weekend from nyc and ate two very very good meals and one pretty good one:

          Habesha for Ethiopian - came with a big group who insisted we go here instead of the myriad other options in the 9th/U area, and it was clear why. without a doubt the best tibbs ive ever had, having never seen it prepared/served on the bone before. everything else was terrific - the red lentils in particular, but really enjoyed the collards, cabbage and other sides. outrageously affordable, costing our group of 7 50 bucks before tip, including a couple sodas.

          Amsterdam falafel was a required post bar stop and also really impressed me - NYC has a couple of relatively newer/more modern falafel spots but none that do the top-it-yourself model which i appreciated. also thought they were putting out a better product than required given the hour and how un-choosy the crowd seemed to be.

          Got a bowl of pho and a pork chop banh mi at Pho 14 in columbia heights that was fine if unexceptional - im used to sub-par Vietnamese options coming from NYC and this was somethign i would have been unsurprised to find at a NYC pho joint. the noodles were a bit clumped together and broth lacked the super deep beefy flavor i look for in first rate pho.

          ETA: Forgot about a stop at the H street country club, which was not serving the full menu between the end of brunch and dinner starting - had a pretty solid (and good value) pitcher of margaritas for about 27 bucks, easily 7 glasses worth, and nachos which were tasty and well constructed (my biggest general gripe about shitty nachos, assuming were not talking about plastic orange cheeze product). A friend got the brisket burrito once the full kitchen opened up and it was too ricey for my tastes but he seemed to like it well enough, and i liked the salad that came on the side.

            Thanks for the Habesha tip I'm not sure it's ever been mentioned on Chowhound. I will have to follow up.

              it is definitely a little short on atmosphere but my friends (and their friends) were fiercely loyal. it was a fluorescent lit room with an open kitchen and steam table and some seriously pricey staples available by the pint and quart (5-6 dollars for a quart of lentils didn't make sense, though they carry green coffee and, of course, berbere which id have found hard to find at equivalent prices here in NY).

              i definitely want to go back and try the tripe and tongue dish (this was the wrong crowd for that order, im afraid).

              this isnt the best picture of the tibs, but i was majorly impressed.

                  Habesha is a wonderful place with amazing good-food-per-dollar ratio. A great ethnic dive.

          2. I visited DGS Deli near Dupont Circle last wednesday with friends who were visiting from the UK. I met them at the bar and we enjoyed a Mazel Tov each (rose champagne, plum liqueur lavender syrup and lemon juice) before going upstairs to our table. I chose the falafel platter - I loved the fresh tasting pickles and beetroot and the falafel were good but huge. My friend had the chicken soup which was really lovely and comforting (and just what she wanted after eating out for every meal for the past week). We were surprised by getting only one huge matzo ball in the dish though. My other friend made the best choice of the evening (the waiter was very approving as he write it on his notepad!) red wine braised brisket with mashed potatoes and horseradish. The beef was sooooo tender.

            We shared two desserts: caramelised banana split with peanut butter ice cream and chocolate sauce and the chocolate bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream. The bread pudding was delicious, not too sweet. Portions again were just vast and we didn't finish either.

            Service was great, not too intrusive (we had a lot of catching up to do so took ages to choose from the menu). The manager came over towards the end of the meal and was very charming.

              I had a special which was a type of kubideh made with ground lamb instead of the standard one which is beef. I’m a lamb fanatic so I also had Kabob-E Barreh (chunks of lamb) along with it. Both were good, I hope they keep offering the lamb kubideh. The bread was good. The rice in my opinion is just filler, next time I’ll stick with the bread.

              Super Chicken, Falls Church
              I’m in this neighborhood often so this was my fourth time there. I always get chicken, yucca, and kidney beans, and sometimes plantains. The sides are fine but it’s the chicken that has me coming back. I’m no expert on this topic but I think they use charcoal so maybe that’s part of why it’s so good. There is usually a steady stream of customers during standard meal times so the chickens aren't sitting around. Beware that the space is small and a bit cramped, as is the parking lot, but the lack of ambiance doesn’t bother me. Service isn’t especially friendly but they’re not rude.

                Most Peruvian chicken use charcoal. If they don't, you should leave. I do like the Super Chicken in Falls Church, and I prefer dark to white meat so I get a half chicken all dark meat. They also have a tripe stew, which is not available as a side dish, but it's pretty tasty. For my sides, I get the yucca and white rice with veggies. They do offer fried rice as a side but the chicken used in the fried rice must be leftover chicken as they're dry and tough. Service is okay from the chicken guys but the dude handling the register (who looks Indian) never cracks a smile.

                  Are Moby Dick's pretty standard? I like the one I go to fine (kingstowne) and wondered if it's worth trying out others. Has anyone tried multiple?
