We'd rather not dine in the gallery itself.

Curious as to why. It's one of the best choices in the area, IMO. The desserts are particularly wonderful, and the room is beautiful.

The prospect of a wait, perhaps as long as 30 minutes or more, is a deterrent, in my book. In that regard, standing in line and eyeing those fabulous window seats with the gorgeous park view only to be offered some small table on the side is another downer. Sure, you can hold out for a window table but by then the time investment could be substantial.

Yes, the wait can be annoying, but we don't know if that's the OP's reason for not wanting to eat there (that's why I asked). Also, I doubt there would be a significant wait on a weekday, but again, we do not know what day OP intends to be there.

      Table de Hote (Madison/92nd)

If you're interested in French bistro, better than Table d'Hôte (IMO), around the corner on Madison, are Pascalou and Le Paris. You probably know this, arepo, but if you search this board for Museum Mile, Guggenheim, Met, and Jewish Museum you'll get lots of other suggestions.
