substitute for soy sauce

For the next few months I'm going to be eating according to the Whole 30 method, eliminating dairy, grains, soy and other legumes, alcohol, sweeteners and most additives. The hardest part I'm dealing with is finding a savory condiment to replace soy sauce, which I use frequently - our typical dinner is a stir-fry, and though I can lose the bottled sauces with all the sugar, the soy sauce seems so integral that I want to find something in its place. Any ideas?

  1. Fish sauce, depending on the brand. Some have added stuff that you would probably be avoiding.

          Coconut aminos are delicious. OP may want to note the sugar content, but they are fun to play with. I particularly love them with good fish sauce and Korean gochujang - awesome synthesis.

            they are noticeably sweet for me so depending on what i'm making, i may do a 50/50 of coconut aminos and fish sauce.

            some fish sauces have sugar or other additives, so here's one that doesn't (and is paelo friendly if you're into that):

              Yes, it's the soy that I'm avoiding for now.

              1. Are you avoiding all legumes? If not, South River Miso has an adzuki bean miso, as well as a chickpea version that would be a nice substitute.
                I've used the coconut aminos for a spell and while it most definitely is NOT soy sauce, it does the trick--sort of, if you're desperate enough. I did find it rather sweet and would often cut down on sugar in recipes. I also would sometimes reduce the amount and use the concentrate (or double up) when it was in place of soy sauce.
