April 2014 Openings and Closings

Seems time to start this one.

The Glenville Stops in Allston just announced its planned opening on Facebook for April 5. Early advance press suggested it would be the "highest-end restaurant ever in Allston"; current website placeholder calls it "Allston's neighborhood tavern".

A great location that they have utterly squandered for years. They've been attracting a club crowd on weekend nights, but I haven't seen more than five or six diners in there at any one time the rest of the week for years and years. I quite enjoyed it from about '98-'05, but they clearly stopped giving a damn about the food and drinks a good eight years ago, and I gave up on it after three or four increasingly grim visits. It is a great location, with a full license, a nice patio and parking. If it is indeed finally changing hands, maybe someone will do something interesting there again.

      1. re: ace88

A friend confirmed today that the Red Fez is indeed closed. Rumor is that its next incarnation will be a gay-friendly sports bar, which kinda sounds like what the Trophy Room, the Fritz replacement, is also supposed to be.

        1. re: MC Slim JB

That's what I heard last weekend as well.

          1. re: Karl S

Universal Hub confirms: it will be called Cathedral Station and is aiming to open in May.

      2. I saw that about Glenville Stops. I wonder if that's a soft opening or a grand opening. Tough to tell from the post.

Per Urban Daddy, Glenville Stops hosts a block party on Friday and opens officially on Saturday.

        2. Bostonia Public House opens in the former Kitty O'Shea's space at 131 State St in mid-April. "Locally-inspired, refined-rustic” menu by chef Kyle Ketchum, formerly of The Lark in Michigan and Spiced Pear in RI.

Bostonia is soft opening tomorrow and Tuesday (April 14-15) and plans to be open to the public at the end of this week.

Chef Kyle was most recently of the now closed Woodward at Ames (he was the last chef there before it closed).

          2. Sweetgreens' Fort Point location was open today and doing brisk business around lunch time. The window signs at Pastoral say they are now open for dinner with lunch service to start later in April.

            1. I'm hearing April 15 for the long awaited La Brasa. This date might be ambitious, but regardless, I'm looking forward to this one.

              1. Sami's in the medical area has been closed for a couple weeks. It says temporary and that something needs to be fixed but I haven't seen any work being done. Anyone got more info?

Also Rita's Cafe on Cypress St. has paper on the windows.

                  Rita's has reopened, as promised.

Mystic Station is not in a mall. It is taking over the space that was Division 7 in Malden Square

                    1. re: pemma

Apologies. I should never mention Malden unless it's to praise FuLoon or lament the passing of Biriyani Park, literally the only two places I've ever dined at there.

                      1. re: MC Slim JB

MC, there are a number of good dining spots in Malden. Definitely worth a trip up to try a few, including All Seasons Table, Habesha, and Pasta Market Cafe.

                        1. re: hiddenboston

All those places are on my list, but I never get to them. Not really Malden's fault.

                    2. re: MC Slim JB

where on eater boston do you see that H-Mart is gonna open in april? the post I could find only says go-go curry in the food court is hiring...

                        1. re: MC Slim JB

Yeah, April is still the last estimate I've heard thrown around, although this blogger is guessing it won't be before summer based on how the construction looked last month: http://japaneseamericaninboston.blogs...

                          1. re: blumiethekoala

Based on daily glances through the windows there, an April opening definitely seems plausible at this point.

                          2. re: MC Slim JB

you were right, the h-mart website says they are opening on april 23 http://www.hmart.com/company_new/gran...

                          3. re: divinebaboon

On H Mart's Burlington flyer, it says the grand opening for Cambridge is April 23.

oh snap, i'm gonna spread the news to my friends, thanks a ton

                          4. re: MC Slim JB

Apparently we have a karaoke bar in Malden now: 1986 KTV. The Mayor's office posted pictures of him with the owners at their opening.

They have a website which I can't read since English is my only language:

It's located at 76 Exchange Street (directly across from Exchange Street Bistro) in a space used to be a dry cleaners. i don't think you can walk-in, it's rooms for private rentals according to the City's announcement: http://www.cityofmalden.org/index.cfm...

                            1. re: gimlis1mum

Have some fun - plug their url into Google translate.

                              1. re: NE_Wombat

Lol, that was even better as my Google Translate was inadvertently set to translate web pages into German.

                          5. Had breakfast at the Allston Diner this morning, and Noticed Opening Soon signs for Lulu's Allston next door. A quick Google search came up with their menu.

If it's good, the neighborhood could use a place like this.

                              1. re: Jenny Ondioline

Made from this, one would presume:
                                7 WILD GAME CHILI
local cheddar, scallions, sour cream, baguette

While the wild game/venison chili served at the annual wild game supper in Bradford VT is a favorite - and quite a good chili - I'm kind of dubious about those garnishes, particularly the scallions and baguette.

                                1. re: Jenny Ondioline

Ha!! I'm with you. And a quick encore eye-roll is in order for "3 Mexican Cheetos: Just Gotta Try Them."

                                2. re: kimfair1

Let's hope that it is good. The menu is a bit precious, but it does have a pretty broad appeal. They need to learn to spell banh mi, though.

                                  1. re: bear

If you're opening a restaurant and you misspell words like "banh mi" and "monsieur" on your menu, you need a new menu designer or a better proofreader, definitiely

                                3. Laffa, the chaotic falafel and frozen yogurt place in the Park Sq. Building is closed.

The yogurt machines have been removed.

                                  1. A place called Bailey & Sage (appears to have other boston location but never heard of it) has petitioned to open at 5 Cambridge Center.

It's a high end (relatively speaking) sandwich and salad mostly take out place on State Street in the Financial District.

                                    2. Bagelville in Arlington scheduled for this Friday, April 4, says Patch.

                                      1. Somebody on Yelp Talk Boston noted that No. 9 Park was unexpectedly closed on March 31, presumably temporarily. Looks like it is accepting OpenTable reservations for tonight, which would suggest it's back open (though that is not a perfectly reliable indicator).

                                        Anyone hear anything about this?

The restaurant had a post about it on Facebook and Twitter, so I'd assume it was an unexpected, temporary closing. https://www.facebook.com/no9parkbosto...

                                        2. Looks like Parla is opening pretty soon. It's in the old Il Villaggio spot at 230 Hanover. The focus is on cocktails and small plates. Same owner but everything else is new. Their Facebook page says, "Counting down the days" but gives no indication of the number of days.

                                          2. Roxy's new brick and mortar spot in Allston is now scheduled to open at the end of the month.

                                            1. The Pongal in Billerica was dark when I drove past a week ago, with a dumpster out front. The phone rang unanswered, so I looked at Yelp after finding no recent mentions on CH. Someone there said it was out of business. But when I checked their website, it said they are closed for repair of weather-related damage and that the phones aren't working. Facebook will have updates.
They plan on regional theme Wednesday dinner buffets when they reopen, which I assume is an aim to compete with Ritu Ki Rasoi's Wednesday dinners. I did post to Yelp to correct the misinformation.

                                              2. Not April, but late March and un-noted.

Rincón Mexicano at 99 Broadway in Somerville, is an excellent quality authentic Mexican place - the guys who run it are from Mexico City. I have a long post about it under "Best Burritos".

                                                1. According to Eater (http://boston.eater.com/archives/2014...), Audubon is already reopen under the new Trina's affiliated ownership. It looks like they have added more TVs (3 on the back wall, where there was previously 1), and 1 above the previous menu/specials blackboard behind the bar. Also, from the photo it looks like they have removed the pointed table of death and replaced it with overflow bar seating with the same contour of the bar. In all my years I was always waiting for, but fortunately never witnessed, someone impaling them self on the pointy end of the old table.

The menu looks promising for a pre-game spot, so I'll keep an open mind that it will be executed better than Trina's food. Hopefully the patio is still intact and largely unchanged.

Stopped into Audubon Boston yesterday for a beer before the Sox game. Except for the (accurate) changes noted in the post above, the space is largely unchanged. They even have a long list of names on one of the chalkboards that thanks the Audubon Circle staff members who stayed on to work at the new incarnation.

We didn't have food, but the menu looks decent and the beer list is a step up from Audubon Circle's offerings (which weren't bad, but the new menu gets a bit more craft-beer centric). They seem to have raised their cocktail game as well (in line with the offerings at Trina's).

True. And it's a prime piece of property, so I could see a lot of interest. But on the other hand, some buildings in that stretch seem to be staying put - eg. Darwin's going into the former Royal Bengal space. But yes, the closure could be related to real estate or something else, and could have nothing to do with HMart coming.

Tables and chairs are gone and they seem to be doing some work inside, but no sign is posted to indicate whether the close is temporary or permanent. If I had to guess, I'd guess permanent. It has sat close to empty most nights.

I suppose the owners heard our snarking and decided to get moving ;) Last night we were walking past (another A4 trip!) and saw them setting things up inside.

I've never been to the original, but as I live around the corner I'm excited for another option in the immediate area. I just hope it's decent!

                                                                              1. re: soylent_greens

                                                                                1. re: soylent_greens

                                                                                  1. re: viperlush

I find Clover really boring. It has nothing to do with vegetables either, as I'm definitely not someone who thinks vegetarian options can't be good, and I like Life Alive a lot. Clover's french fries are good, but I don't think they are all that special.

I'd rather have HiFi, especially late at night, or a falafel hot off the panini press at Falafel Palace.

                                                                              2. re: Uncle Yabai

I just discovered it last month--lots of Middle Eastern groceries, but by the time I went back, about a week ago, it had closed. Feeling like I should have sung its praises more on this board...

It just wasn't the location for a regional specialty most people haven't heard of, I guess.
