Leftover wine

i know it's hard to believe, but sometimes i don't finish a bottle of wine. i have always found the vacuvin pretty useless and usually just drink the remaining wine in the next day or two but it obviously doesn't taste the same. some big young wines actually improve but i have many mature wines that lose much by just recorking. i don't want to spring for a product that uses inert gas. i recently started decanting the remaining wine into a clean 375ml bottle and i think it makes a big difference. i also read about someone putting glass marbles into the bottle to displace the air. very clever but too much of a hassle. what do you do?

  1. Glass marbles - reminds me of the Aesops fable where the crow drops stones into the water vessel his beak can't reach.
    I'm cautious about opening a wine bottle that won't be finished that evening, or otherwise drinkable the next day. As you observe, some are better on day 2.

      Anyone who read and remembers Aesop's Fables gets a gold star ! As for leftover wine, we finish it while doing the dishes.
