wild salmon

Is there anywhere on the north shore to buy wild salmon, retail?
I know it will most likely be frozen, that's ok.

  1. is there a WF up there now? does Ipswich Seafood have a retail market now?

    1. Shaw's/Star has wild sockeye on sale this week - I know that the fish counters at Shaw's are not well regarded, and they certainly vary widely, but the one at my neighborhood Star is quite good.

      1. Check with Rowan's in Beverly.

        1. Heck, if you don't mind frozen go to Trader Joe's.

That's what I do. Bought some last night at $11.99 a pound. If you dig, you can find good center cut pieces as well.

My dad lives in the Pacific North-West and there is nothing like buying a whole fresh King Salmon in season and caught that day. But for the rest of the year, I think the frozen is fine and the price is reasonable.

Off topic, I know, but I find that to be the case with shrimp. Except when Maine shrimp are in season (*sob* for this year), I think it's better to buy frozen shrimp in the bag. The "fresh" shrimp out on display has always been previously frozen, so what's the benefit? I've had several episodes on amonia-y shrimp bought this way, before I switched my purchase pattern.
Do the members of the board agree?

          2. Hi
Thanks for the suggestions. I got good sized filet at Shaw's and it was fine? acceptable?, good enough? It was listed as previously frozen, which is to be expected. Anyway,it was fresh smelling and looking, but not as flavorful as the frozen salmon I got at WF.
I'm in Gloucester and wanted to find some without going 'ovah the bridge,' Will try Trader Joe's sometime.

And to opinionatedchef, there is no WF yet. Supposedly all the local issues have been resolved to make way for one in Beverly at the new North Shore Commons shopping center on Brimbal Ave; slated to open in 2016.

I was about to reply that the Shaw's in Waltham had previously frozen wild salmon on sale for something like $9.99/lb. It looked good
