Driving from Montgomery to Charleston - Good southern road food on the way?

Hi - I am visiting relatives near Montgomery this August. We will be a family of four visitng from San Francisco. After Selma, we will road trip to Charleston over a 2-3 days. I think we will go by way of Savannah. I know there's lots of info on Charleston and Savannah o these boards, but I'd love info on the driving part.

My question is, are there any great stops en route across Alabama on 16, or from Savannah up to Charleston? We would especially love Southern specialties - my hope is for a secret barbecue house like in N Carolina, or a fabulous biscuits or grits or hush puppies spot. Thanks so much for any help on this...

(And yes, I know August will be awfully hot, but that's when we have the vacation time to go, so it will be an educational experience for SF kids)

  1. Alabama is on the Central South Board, so you should probably post on there for that part of your trip.

Do you have a route in mind across GA?

    1. You will probably go thru Macon,Ga.If you do,there is a local restaurant at 475 and Zebulon Rd.Coming from Columbus u will cross 475 a few miles south of Zebulon exit.Really, really good fried shrimp, catfish akso good, but get the shrimp.u will thank me.

      1. I don't have a specific route in mind, just the most direct across GA to Savannah. And it looks like we will stop in Macon, thanks r1949! Any other suggestions?

I did post on the Central South board too, once I figured that out. Thank you for the feedback.
