Where could I find small whole crabs (like blue crabs) or even larger dungeness crabs this time of year? Thx

  1. Chinatown. My favorite market is Aquabest on Grand.

I was shopping in the mid-size Chinese supermarket on Clinton St. and one of the live frogs got loose. You don't get that kind of excitement at Gristedes.

I was on 8th Ave. in Sunset Park once, walking past one of the seafood stores, when an eel made a break for it. Didn't get far.

Wow! I'd pay cash money to see that. I wonder if anyone sells those walking snakehead fish. I have an idea for an in-store competition.

Haha!! Exactly! I've seen those mad little crabs try to make a break for it a few times....

(And oh dear god please never buy seafood from gristedes!!)

Oh, not to hijack, but what's that market like? I walk by frequently but have never been in.

It's not the best. Good selection of non-perishables, but the produce/sea food is questionable - it was a good deal better when the market first opened. If you need something in a can or a bottle, wonton wrappers or frozen fish balls or what have you, it's fine. But if you're looking for fresh vegetables, I'd head over to Best Produce in Essex Market (the northernmost one). They've up'ed their game, lately.

          4. Are you looking for a restaurant or a fish market?

a market -- and chinatown is close -- so i'll start there. thanks!

            2. It's a bit early in the year for East Coast crabs. Most of the crabs I've seen in Chinatown lately appear sluggish or dead. The dungeness crabs in tanks are probably the better buy.

              1. Centre Seafood 206 Centre st. between Hester and Grand. If you have a coffee table size wok and an unlimited budget they often have King Crabs. Most of their business is from live shell and fish from clean tanks. Aquabest is fine for crabs also.
