CH borderliner unusable on iPad, just me?

Due to the way the site loads, with all of the ads coming and going - and combined with the navigation UI, I find the site increasingly difficult to use on my iPad (to the extent that I'm starting to ween myself off of reading it there, despite an increasing amount of my browsing happening on my ipad).

What's the problem?

Well, I load a page. I go to 'click' on a thread title or reply count. And it sits there for a few seconds while the page completes loading and then everything reorders itself and my 'click' is now attached to another part of the page and the wrong thread is loaded.

One alternative is that I can wait several seconds for a page to load, every single time. That's not happening.

  1. Not just you! I use my IPad for CH as a last resort only. I can't tell you how many times I have opened a thread I didn't mean to, accidentally reordered my discussion list etc. It is maddening.

    1. Agreed. The site barely functions on ipad.

      1. I have the same thing happening. While I'd like it be corrected, I find waiting the 5 seconds (or less) not that excruciating. I certainly don't find it "borderline unusable", not even close.

The combination of the long wait and the hodgepodge way it loads is synergistic. "It must be done by now ..." and then blam, it was still rejiggering things.

          1. re: jgg13

Just keep your eye on the spinning thingamajig in the upper left corner...when it disappears, you're good to go.

            1. re: grampart

Yes, I'm aware. The point is that the length of wait that is happening here is so far beyond what's normally considered within reasonable that sometimes one forgets.

Also, the amount of time is well beyond what's normally considered reasonable.

              1. re: jgg13

Agreed and often it appears to have loaded then the page jumps one last time. Argh!!!

                1. re: foodieX2

That's the one that drives me to drink. It often happens just as the wheel stops spinning, so you say, "Aha! Finally done!" and them bam.

                  1. re: foodieX2

Totally agree. Its making me crazy. I even bit the bullet and updated to ios7 so I could install adblock...no ads but it still bounced all over. Luckily I went with the free trial.

                2. re: grampart

This is actually untrue. It seemed particularly bad this morning so I was paying close attention.

First: it was taking over 5 seconds to load
Second: about 2 of those seconds were after the spin I g thingamajig stopped spinning.
Worst: the last jump was often a full second after everything else - so it'd appear that everything was fine and blammo

            2. Seems to work fine on iPad Air.

              1. re: gourmanda

I do suspect that it's a device-speed issue (my iPad is now 2 years old), particularly as it slightly improved when I upgraded to iOS 7. Also, as it seems to be getting increasingly worse, my suspicion is that they're loading in an increasing number of slower loading tidbits on the side (or just the same number of increasingly slow loading tidbits)

                1. re: gourmanda

I use an ipad air and the site jumps up and down numerous times. It is very annoying indeed.

                  1. re: gourmanda

                    No problem on IPad Air!
Perhaps it jumps around because of a slow internet connection?

                  2. Yes, same problem here. Very annoying.

                    1. Yes! This happens to me all the time. So annoying. I thought it was my internet connection, glad to know I am not alone.

                      1. I have the newest Mini.
                        Same hopping/ mis-selecting issues.

                        1. I would try other browsers other than safari. Many sites are optimized for chrome so I would give it a try before Firefox, that or opera might help a little.

You would think that the mobile version would be optimized a bit differently, no? Or is that what you're referring to.

                            1. re: jgg13

Mobile sites are still often optimized for chrome. Safari acts differently than many other browsers, as does my android internet browser. Often chrome works better on mobile devices as well.

                          2. Add me to this crowd as well. It actually seems to be getting worse every week.

                            1. Thanks everyone for the feedback. We're looking into some ways to improve this.

Is it correct that this is more of a problem on board pages? (i.e. the issue jgg13 describes about loading the wrong thread)

                                Hi Dave.

I don't have my ipad w/ me but I really only recall going bonkers over the main board pages. I think that now and then I run into it when trying to expand previously read threads but that's a much more infrequent use case than clicking on threads.

                                1. re: Dave MP

Thanks Dave. I have an ipad 2 with ios7 and I use Safari. The issue is the "bouncing" of site content as the relevant page loads. The bouncing occurs whether I'm loading the Chow home page or any thread (whether or not I've contributed to it previously). The true CH content bounces/moves around the page to accommodate the various ads as they load. For me, installing adblock did not address the issue. The content still bounced around the page to make space for the ads...the ads just didn't appear.

The bouncing unto itself is annoying enough both visually and in the amount it takes for the site to finally orient itself on the page. The other issue this presents though is that you never really know if the page has finished loading. If you make the mistake of trying to click on a link too soon, you run the risk that the page bounces again and the thread or link you intended to click has moved somewhere else on the page (perhaps 2 inches higher) so now you've clicked on something else all together.

As folks have pointed out, it seems to be getting worse...meaning it's taking longer for the page to orient itself as the page is bouncing more and more.

I hope this helps and I really hope you're able to fix this. As others have said, it's effectively rendering my ipad useless for viewing this site.

I use an iPad3 with iOS7 and Safari.
Dave asked, "Is it correct that this is more of a problem on board pages? (i.e. the issue jgg13 describes about loading the wrong thread)"
No. If I am on Chow Features or Recipes or on a board it behaves about the same. It's even more aggravating when you press the back button to return to a page.

Same here on an iPad4 with iOS7.1 and Safari.

                                    2. re: Dave MP

I created a thread about this very issue several months ago. It's extremely frustrating to have it bounce around.

                                    3. I posted earlier into this thread -
I have two IPads - the original first and now a new IPad Air ( that runs Safari on OS 7.1)
I just checked, no problem on either, except the old IPad is just a touch slower than the new IPad Air.
Is it possible that a slow connection is the problem for many?

Definitely not my connection. I can download and stream movies, videos, etc with no issue. All other sites, including those with plugins, load and display accurately.

                                            1. re: RUK

If it was connection speed, wouldn't it also be an issue on one's laptop/desktop.

I used to see this problem somewhat (a lot less pronounced) on the gawker sites, but that's gone away now.

                                            2. DaveMP, so many of us have come here to share our concerns about this. We've taken time out from our busy days to detail the issues we are facing. We'd love to know if this is a priority and what's being done (if anything) to fix it. I'm finding it hard to understand why it's so hard to recreate this issue.

I was in an Apple store this afternoon and tried to connect to CH w an ipad and had the same issues there.

                                              2. Same problem here. I find the page will "jump" as many as 6 times as it loads. I've learned to count the jumps and pause a few seconds before selecting a link. Otherwise, I end up on a page that I never intended to select. It is really annoying.

                                                1. I spoke too soon. After a Safari update on iPad Air, I can no longer access Chowhound from that device. The site just hangs with a continuous red spiral. Thoughts on what is wrong?

I also use Dolphin and Chrome on my Mini.

Same loading-jumping issues, but if you need something other than Safari...

Thanks for that--turns out that when Safari updated JavaScript was no longer turned on. Turning it on fixed the problem.

                                                  2. I think I finally figured out why this isn't being addressed. I have been forced to use my IPad for the last few days and at least a 1/2 a dozen times I have accidentally clicked on the banner ad. More clicks on ads means more revenue to chow. Now it makes total sense.

Can wait to get my laptop back.
