Planning on doing a pepper crusted duck breast with cherry port wine sauce... No dice on fresh tart cherries anywhere. Could I go with frozen?

Absolutely. Work as well as fresh. Be sure to drain them well as they get watery. And tart cherry season is late June to early July, none anywhere but in a freezer.

I cannot imagine you would find fresh cherries anywhere this time of year in the Chicago area. In terms of substituting frozen, you probably should post on Home Cooking. ( sounds to me like it would work since the cherries are for a sauce).

I was praying that there was some miracle and that the fruit gods would smile down on me. No such luck though :(

I am not aware of a source of frozen tart (Montmorency) cherries in the Chicago area (would like to hear of one) but they can be ordered by mail from Michigan. Google "michigan frozen cherries mail" for several suppliers.

I found frozen Montmorency cherries today at the WholeFoods on Huron, downtown. If one WF carries them, any other WF can get them if they don't already have them. Speak to your nearest WF manager . The brand is Omena Organics; price is $6.99 for a 16-oz bag of pitted cherries.
