Q (sushi) - redux
Decided to revisit Q to reassess the place after they've had a few months to settle in.
Overall a very good dinner. Fish quality was excellent throughout as was the rice. Some of the best engawa, katsuo, octopus, otoro I've had in recent memory. The miso cured uni was delicious. The curing process adds a sweet complex flavor profile which complemented the uni very well. Minor quip, while I enjoyed the tamago, I would have preferred it served at room temperature vs. chilled.
Other visible changes, the Latino sushi assistant was nowhere to be seen. I think they were down to 2 waiters from 4 during my first visit.
My conclusion - I still believe it's the best looking sushi bar in LA. I probably had too unrealistically high expectations the first time I visited. More enjoyable experience this time round by not trying to mentally assess and nitpick every detail to rationalize the cost of a meal. IMO they serve some of the best sushi in town in a beautiful setting. If you need a 'white linen' zen sushi experience to impress someone who appreciates good sushi, this is the place to go. But be prepared to shell out beaucoup dineros.
Aside from "excellent", can you offer any specific thoughts on the shari?
Is the meal at the same price point as when it first opened? Were they busy?
I hope Ruiz-san is still working there - he's fun to chat with. Maybe it was his day off.
Again, thanks. I might go back soon.
Shari was firm and on the cooler side of room temperature. Seasoning was subtle - just a hint to accentuate the rice which was still the dominant flavor profile. I think Q does a great job of just focusing and highlighting the primary ingredients without resorting to superfluous sauces or accompaniments. Very unforgiving to any subpar ingredients.
Crowd was sparse, just 4 other diners when I was there. Price point is still the same.
Definitely worth revisiting, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
