Trip to Massanutten in VA

Going to Massanutten resort first week of June. I have been there a few times before and there isn't anything on the mountain that is very good, but I'm looking for anything interesting in the area (Harrisonburg is the bigger city in the area). I have searched and found a few things but wanted to see if there was anything new or if a specific question about the area would get some responses.

I've eaten at Hanks and Log Cabin BBQ which are both just off the access road and found them to be good but not necessarily great.

Whenever I go on vacation I'm particularly interested in "regional" cooking, however you might want to interpret that, or anything fun and different. I am more of a burger and beer guy than anything. My wife is allergic to shellfish.

Thanks!

  1. I saw some Massanutten references in the DC board, would that be a better place to ask?

    1. Jess' Quick Lunch at the original downtown Harrisonburg location is the dog & burger place to go to. You'll pass a location out on Rt 33 on the way from Massanutten, but just continue on to downtown. Sit the old counter for the best atmosphere.

Another great dive is the Basic City Luncheonette in Waynesboro. A hole-in-the-wall but great home cooked breakfasts.

        Thanks for the tips.

      2. You might want to take a look at the Edible Blue Ridge website and their online magazine. The issue currently there focuses on artisan foods produced in the Shenandoah Valley. Also, the ads are helpful in finding interesting food sites, from markets to restaurants. I used it last summer on a trip to Staunton, ending up eating at several very good "farm to table" type places.

        1. Now that I'm a couple weeks away from heading down to VA, I thought I'd throw this up to the top to see if anybody had any new thoughts.

          Thanks.

          1. Have you checked Jane and Michael Stern's books and website to se if they have visited anything in the area?
