palmier, eclair, paris-brest, tarte, pate chaud at Au Coeur de Paris, Garden Grove
the Pham + Huynh team opened their second Au Coeur de Paris in the same plazda as divang2, across the Starz plaza, and up 1 block from Cafe MCutie. this bears no relation to their pastries, which are pretty much all fantastic, and have highest QPR of any French-style bakery in the LA-vacinity and beyond.
Right now, the second branch is still very new, and the news hasn't spread, so it is very possible to show up during during weekend lunch and still find a couple of pate chauds (some of the best in LA i've had, just kills the junk served at Lee's, Tip Top, etc.).
The macarons have rather dense fillings, and while tasty enough, just isn't attractive as the monstrous paris-brest ($3.50) and the various perfectly buttery and flaky tartes.
While the croissants may not be as complex as the version at proof, I don't have to deal with the parkin, nor the the inanes line on the weekend; also, they're only $1.50.
The almond chocolate croissant basically kills any rendition of pain au chocolat in LA.
