Where can I shop for a great picnic lunch and than where should we picnic? We will be arriving in Montreal on a Wednesday afternoon and I would like to pick up a few things for a picnic lunch on Thursday afternoon. Is Jean Talon Market open on Thursday morning? Is it the best market or is there another I should seek out. Where should we picnic? We will have a car.

  1. The Jean Talon market is open every morning. We found it great for a picnic. Cheese from Fromagerie Hamel (north side of market), bread from the store in the structure on the west side of the market, and fruit etc. from the market itself. We had a car as well, and took a day trip to the Laurentians. We picnic-ed on the top of Mont Tremblant. FYI there is an SAQ (the provincial liquor store) right at the base of the mountain, so we got a cold bottle of wine and took the gondola to the top. There a picnic tables on the "easy" trail, right near the top.

If you don't want to go so far outside Montreal, I guess you could go to the top of Mount Royal. There was also a park just north of Jean Talon and west of Rue St. Laurent.

    1. the atwater market is miles better than the jean-talon. especially check out 'les douceurs'.

for a gourmet grocery, try les cinq saisons- there's one in westmount as well as one on bernard ave. great prepared foods.
