i gave up on them when they stopped selling salmon heads for only $.75 (that included the collar, BTW).

But when Roger Hughes died and the other 3 partners held on to the Huntington Drive site, the buying power, to say nothing of the competitive environment, all slowly took their toll. And the changing demographics in that area could not have helped.
Hughes Market was always my favorite market when I moved to Sherman Oaks over 30 years ago, and would continue to be so today if....
Hows was never the same as Hughes, although they tried to be.
Time marches on, competition changes things, just as the Albertson's takeover of Vons & Safeway will prove fairly soon.

Von's, and esp Safeway into Albertsons=A drastic mistake IMO.

I can't stand either Vons or Albertson's, but when it comes to image, there's no question that Vons/Safeway > Albertson's.

I was informed of this the other day. Very sad indeed, especially for anyone who buys meat.

Sad to hear this news. I shopped at Hughes and Hows with my now gone loved ones and have lots of memories. As well it was part of my tradition to order Diestel turkey from Hows each November......

The last few times I had been to the San Marino location, the store seemed so empty that I had wondered how long it would afford to stay open. In contrast the Whole Foods in east and west Pasadena is always full - often getting parking takes time.

I used to love their weekly specials but noted for a while that prime was not often on their list anymore.

Kind of glad Pa-in-law didn't live to see this, 'cause it would've killed him! Harris Ranch beef at supermarket prices, not to mention their willingness to fill special orders; that's how I got the first sweetbreads I ever cooked, and they were both fresh and cheap. I've noticed that my other former go-to place, Bristol Farms, seems to have misplaced their real butchers in favor of surly meat clerks – unless the guy at the South Pas store was an aberration – which leaves only the independent shop in Howie's.

Its a ways from Pasadena, but JIm's Fallbrook Market in West Hills has the kind of service HOWS and Hughes did. Harris Ranch beef as well. Their prices are higher than HOWS but not in the Lindy and Grundy range. Very nice people and will fill special orders. Great seafood too.

I asked a butcher they other day at Ralph's to grind some meat for me, he said they don't do that. lol
