As it happens...or close to it

Tamashiro fish market is great

Had the onion ahi poke, spicy tuna, ahu lime, and Korean mussels - along with steamed sweet potato

All that for $20 - amazing

  1. Tamashiro's is nice but Kyung's is far better. Both are fresh but K's is higher quality...

      Kyung's is TERRIBLE

      You should be banned for 1 month for recommending it

      The poke was fishy, garlic shrimp rubbery - fish didn't seem that fresh

      First place that was actually bad on the trip so far

        Wow! I'm there weekly and never have had anything that wasn't very fresh. I only order the Sashimi though..best place for that..

            Got the Ox tail ramen Shio broth, with the goyza, they also offer fried rice with the combo Mrs D liked the rice, I was so so about it

            The oxtail came with a gingery dipping sauce that was great along with the super clean Shio broth...cleaner tasting than the simplest chicken noodle soup - I almost punched up the flavor before just enjoying it for what it was...and with the dipping sauce it was a nice contrast

            I don't know if it is destination ramen but certainly good for a quick bite to eat if you are staying in the area, cash only

                Holy crap Leonard's donuts are good - thx for telling me I needed that on the list - totally worth the trip for anyone

                Lilihana bakery was cool counter service old school diner, their coco puff was tasty, got the loco moco, tasted like Salisbury steak - heavy dish - but fun to try, not sure I would order it again though

                Mrs d got the spam and eggs - spam was cooked well and she enjoyed it

          1. Hwoak was fun - Mai tai was pretty good as was the mojito - the coconut shrimp was ok but nothing special, good to munch during the show

            Good call on the being tired from travel early night day1

            No late night adventures first day

            RH so far has been excellent to stay at

            1. Nanzan GiroGiro was pretty amazing - the attention to detail, open kitchen, every plate is hand made. (You can order them) good food

              Excellent value for the price IMO

              Great experience - would certainly put this on a must do list if you are coming to honolulu

              Ordered a sake glass and tea cup

                Great meal progression and wine pairings were spot on

                Goma Tei ramen - Tam Tam Char Sui

                I can say I "get" ramen now - wow + ice cold Kirin

                Had ailana shave ice prior - the owners are so nice, red bean special was amazing

                The strawberry milk ice was also so subtle like strawberry quik light- great

                  1. Only have time for one more ramen - either Lucky Belly for a Beast Bowl or Gomamachi for tan tan

                    I love goma Tei but not sure which one to try

                      gomaichi is essentially just like goma tei
                      lucky belly is a totally different experience

                        May as well go for something different so I concur. Try Lucky Belly. Though since you liked the tan tan, maybe you would be interested in comparing the one from gomaichi to the one from goma tei.
                        I still prefer Agu (tonkotsu), Santouka (shio), Kai (miso), & Yotteko-ya (paitan) though. I like the Sung Hon men at Gomaichi also, since it is so different.
                        I am not a fan of the tan tan at either gomaichi or goma tei though, so my taste doesn't seem to match up to yours.

                            It's like a spicy sour broth, kinda like hot sour soup. Very unique. I think they created the dish to differentiate themselves from goma tei.

                                Drove by lucky belly twice and parking seemed impossible

                      2. Gomaichi was easily the weakest of the ramen places, not as flavorful, a lot less meat and veggies, not as nice inside, no Kirin or any beer on draft

                        Menchanko Tei was mrs d's favorite for the cold soup that is recommended on the menu

                        She liked the shoyu at goma Tei 2nd best

                          Giovanni's shrimp truck very over rated - the kalbi truck was better in that plaza

                          Will write up a proper review of everything over the weekend

                            Who rates Giovanni's Shrimp Truck highly? To me it is the epitome an a true tourist trap. It is over priced, over sauced and the only people who recommend it and go seem to tourists. When I drive by I see very few locals in line.

                            That's too bad. Well, at least we know that goma tei's tan tan is superior to gomaichi's. I'm shocked that enjoyment was found in the shoyu ramen at goma tei. Hopefully that means that they have improved since the last time I went. I've tried it several times and the broth had no depth, tasting like shoyu poured into water. It was easily one of the worst shoyu ramen I have ever had. Comments echoed by other family members who have gone on other occasions. They do enjoy their tan tan men though.

                              I am not saying it is the best shoyu out there, but it was certainly the most flavorful of the 3 (I tried them all and going off her opinion)

                              It was not her favorite soup though - I forget the name of the cold soup we had, I will figure it out later and get a proper review

                          3. Did you make it to the Saturday KCC Farmer's Market, The Pig & the Lady, Sushi Izakaya Gaku, or Helena's?

                              No to KFC market and pig and lady but we did drive by pig and lady

                              We can get killer Vietnamese in Cali so it was tough to make it a special trip

                                Dakota..no one in California or Scottsdale calls it "Cali'.

                                Sounds like you had a good time for your first time in the islands.

                                You need to eat numerous times at a place before you
                                start bashing it on the net.

                                Locals and semi-locals have been dining at these places for a long time and to blast a place as terrible, for your first visit, is not cool..IMO.

                                  If the fish was that far gone and they still served and cant cook shrimp properly, well in my book that is terrible and it wouldn't get a 2nd chance

                                  the fish appears good, but the plastic greens give me pause.

                                    Like I said the Sashimi at Kyung's is from the Auction daily and their is no fresher in Honolulu.
                                    We go to Gaku, Sasabune,and Mitch's for Sushi.

                                        You mean there are places that don't use plastic greens? I've found then to be quite ubiquitous.

                                            are you getting takeout, or eating in? i've never seen the plastics used for dine in, usually a bed of shredded cabbage.

                                            With enough wasabi and shoyu the plastic greens really aren't that bad. Sake helps too.
