La Jolla Brewing Company on Zagat's "hottest restaurants" list

I've not yet visited this place - I'd rather drive to North Park from UTCland than drive into the Village on many days - but this seems entirely out of the blue. Is this Zagat's version of Wolfie's UT column?

  1. Interesting, I went by this place last week, still in construction and not open. So, how the heck can Zagats rate it? They must be listening to the UT and Yelp.

      It's been open for two months. Perhaps they were still working on the patio, but it's been open...

          So are you implying that not all food related news/reviews in SD (and anywhere else) news outlets isn't done by independent, qualified journalists ?

          Are you talking about the place on Fay across from Vons. It looked like a war zone.

            It's open and appears to already be very popular (although I haven't been in - beer is not my first language).

              The Brewing Company is next to Rubio's, sort of set back a bit. It's not exactly across from Von's, more across from it's back parking lot entry. I think there is construction further to the north on Fay, more directly across from Von's.

                That's the one I saw. So, let's do some quick analysis.
                LJ Brewing is open for 2 months and is on Zagats Hottest Restaurant List, really... Zagats must have done a heck of a sweep of the country to pull this one out of their butts. Just confirms their real value.

                  That was my point, CSTR. I don't know about the guide, but their weekly mailing obviously is not based on any sort of real data.

                  On the other hand, I hope this place is worthwhile. I like the beer part of the Public House, but their menu items just didn't click with me.

                    I've only had a few burgers at Public House, thought they were OK. I also like their beer list. I went to the old LJ Brewing Co., not even passable, hope this version is better. Maybe I'll try it out over the next few weeks.

        3. It's pretty good -- been 5 or 6 times over the past couple of months with family. The kids like it a lot. They're brewing their own beer now and the IPAs I've tried are tasty. Lots of duck on the menu (duck eggrolls, duck mac & cheeese, duck confit, etc.). Nothing extraordinary in the food department. Burgers are good, but I would skip the ocean stew (cioppino) and the fries 3 ways -- not that great. I think Zagats was smoking something.

          1. Honestly, it seems virtually identical to a dozen other places in San Diego most of which have been around for years. What exactly does LJBC do different from all the rest besides being located in La Jolla?
