Newbie Welcome Center.......If you are new and have a question ask it here!!

Reflecting on the opinions offered in some recently locked threads, there was one theme that kind of struck me. There were a few comments from newbies stating they felt the boards were some what intimidating. Whether it is the perceived cliques, harsh tones, or just overall fear of the unknown, it concerned me that people would be intimidated to participate in a forum such as this.

I did a quick search for the term “Newbie” in on this board and only came upon this one post, with no responses, a few years old, which seems to make a sincere effort to welcome or help newbies.

Kudos to meatn3 for attempting to reach out to newbies and help them feel more comfortable or knowledgeable, again, I’m surprised that post garnered -0- responses.

So here is my attempt to do the same…………..I offer this thread to all Newbies to come with questions where you can ask and be assured to receive a non-judgmental or critical response. Use this thread to dip your toe into the Chow pool and see if the temperature is to your liking…… need to dive right in at first, ask your questions and proceed at your own pace.

Here is a link to Chow’s posting guidelines; (something I never read till now, and honestly found it a little difficult to even find on the home page)

Welcome to Chow……have a look around……we hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any questions please feel free to ask them here.

Jr. (I have no official Chow capacity here, I'm just a participant like you)

What topic are you interested in? If cooking, then Home Cooking. If dining in Barcelona, then the Spain/Portugal. Let us know.

      1. re: hal2010

That's pretty much the purpose of this thread, what are you looking for help with?

        1. re: jrvedivici

jr, I just looked and hal is an established CH so perhaps we're not understanding the question.

Well lets see if we can get this thread up to 500 posts by the weekend now!

          2. Jr's thread has a pure intent. Give it a fair chance.

Thanks Veggo, it's ok, I know nobody likes me.

              1. re: jrvedivici

Come on, jr. The OP is two months old. I never really understood its point. Newbies don't seem to have a problem asking and answering questions. Chill, buddy.

                1. re: c oliver

{{sniffle-sniffle}} I see C. It was a misguided attempt at being helpful. I won't try anymore, I have finally fullfiled my High School guiddence prediction, I'm a failure!

                  1. re: jrvedivici

What that for poor spelling?!?!?! :) J/K junior. You're great, of course.

I'm drunk on my cell phone, that's as good as it gets, good night!

                      1. re: jrvedivici

Sweet dreams, buddy. See ya in the morning.

              2. re: Veggo

I agree, but I believe the problem is probably that if I were a newbie and would be interested in this thread, I wouldn't even know to look for it. Prior to today it's just been sitting at the bottom for a long time probably going mostly unnoticed. Maybe jr should update it daily to keep it at the top, lol, that could be fun. With any luck it will just turn into jr having an hilarious conversation with himself. ;)

              3. Gooooooood Mornin' NEWBIES!!!!! Jr is on the spot waiting anxiously to answer your questions! Step right up, answers are FREE, correct answers are $2.00! What's that you say; You don't have a question for Jr! That's ok step right up I'll guess your age or your weight!

Do you have welcome packets available for newbies? I think that would be a nice touch.

                  1. re: SaraAshley

I like that idea. With coupons for free meals at nice restaurants.

Jr. - Ask Sushi Man how to get one of these types of threads going...He had real success! ;-D>

                    1. re: Servorg

OMG, I hadn't thought of that in years! LOL.

                      1. re: Servorg

I've made sushi!! Newbies can ask me about sushi!! Key to sushi besides quality ingredients is a tightly packed roll and a very wet and sharp knife!!

                    2. Do you know any websites where I can ask questions about restaurants and food?

Hey, at least I got your thread bumped!

Poor really did try here! I'll pay the first actual newbie some good money to ask a real question. I'm however, expensing it to you jr.
