Great food, open Monday dinner, Durham, possible Chapel Hill?

A former boss of mine will be visiting Duke with his wife next month. I'd like to suggest someplace great for them to eat (preferably in Durham) but the only night they have to themselves is a Monday. This kind of takes away all the places that come immediately to mind: Vin Rouge, Mateo, Elaine's (which is pushing it anyway since it is in CH). I'm under the impression that Nana's is closed on Mondays too but maybe need to check. They're coming from DC so are used to a varied and fairly exciting food scene. Any suggestions? Thanks much in advance.

  1. Revolution and Four square are open on Mondays, off the top of my head

Fantastic - see, I would never have thought of either one of those as they aren't on our regular list of go-to places. Have you been to either recently and was it great?

In Chapel Hill I thought of Lantern, but I have to say my last meal there was snooze-inducing.

Nana's is open on Monday. Lantern and Bin 54 and Elaine's I believe are all open. So is Cholonad but if they are coming from DC it will be hard to beat Bombay Club or Rasika for Indian. Gourmet Kingdom while not fine dining is also open.

I wondered about Nana's. Elaine's is not open. Bin 54 is very good, but DC is full of very good steak houses so I sort of took that one out of the running. And this person has lived in China - I actually suggested GK to my husband as an option we could give him and he nixed it. Apparently the look of the place takes it off the list, which is sad because the food is so good. I think Cholonad could hold it's own against both Bombay Club or Rasika, and I love both those restaurants. Thanks for the suggestions BF and VH - very much appreciated.

My last meal at revolution was fun, but it was last summer. It's been even longer since I've been to four square, but I've had nothing but good meals there. Too many places to keep current with, especially living over an hour away. I haven't even been to One yet (two attempts fell through).

      2. Also in Chapel Hill, but easy to get to, is Jujube. We had a stellar meal there not too long ago. One is also open Mondays and even closer to Durham.

One would be a good suggestion. They may have lived in China but what part of China?

          1. re: burgeoningfoodie

Definitely Beijing, but I think have traveled there extensively. He specializes in the Chinese arm of his work. I thought about One, but not having been there I feel a little iffy about recommending it. Maybe too precious?

Just in case someone (like me, right now) is searching for a place open Mondays, I wanted to let people know that One isn't open on Mondays. Sort of sad as this was a great idea for tonight. Oh well, soon.

Can always try Harvest 18. Wouldn't say it is better than those places mentioned but it is open.

Thanks for the tip - Mondays are Hard!

eta: These are both a little farther than I feel like going this evening, but both Local 22 and Parizade are open on Mondays, which is nice to know.

Nanas has a table for 4 at 5pm and 8pm today on opentable.

Thanks so much for checking. The babysitter comes at 5 which means we wouldn't be able to make the 5pm, and the 8 is a bit too late. I sort of had it in my mind that we'd go to One and sit at the bar, but this wasn't my time for that I guess. We'll figure something out.

The Black House at Straw Valley looks to be open on Mondays.

Last time I checked they weren't. If they are, then that is definitely the place we'll go next time the babysitter can't make a weekend night. Tonight we ended up at Glasshalfull, which I have to say was better than it has been for the past couple of years. I had a great applejack main and a very nice curried cauliflower soup to start. Husband had the same starter and seemed very happy with his steak. Drinks were wonderful, and bottles of wine half price. Weeeee!!!

That info was per Google but could have referred to the cafe and not the restaurant. Glasshalfull doesn't get the recognition is deserves.

                          1. re: bbqme

I've had google give me incorrect info on times many times, so I definitely understand.

I really loved Glasshalfull when it first opened, and then felt it went through a lull. But I really enjoyed our meal last night. I do wish they still did mostly small plates - it was fun to get to try a lot of things, but obviously they've found what works best for their business model.

Oops - I meant amberjack. Must have been the half price wine typing.
