Bouncing page/automatically refreshing
As I went to read some posts today, I remembered why I have hardly been on Chowhound in the last couple of months.
I primarily use my iPad mini to access Chowhound. When I click to read a post or hit the back button, the text "bounces" all over the page while it is loading. What I mean by that is for 5-8 seconds the text appears in different places on the screen. At first it's where it should be then it bounces to the bottom of the screen, then to the middle, etc. the the text gets really tiny before returning to normal size. Doesn't sound like a big deal but 8 seconds is a long time when you're waiting for a page to stop reloading!
Also, even more annoying, is that my page will refresh itself every 50-60 seconds and it takes you to the bottom of the page. I know new posts are not being added, but I don't think that matters anyway. I was reading a thread that had almost 300 posts and every minute I had to try to find where I left off.
One last issue, although minor compared to the last one. When I use the back button to return to the listing of threads, it used to open where I left off. So if I was near the bottom of the list, it would take me back to the bottom. Now it takes me back to the top and I have to scroll through 100 threads to get back to where I was.
Any help would be appreciated. I miss Chowhound!
The bouncing has been discussed and I was one of the people experiencing it, it is a result of the banner and side ad's loading on the page. Download either adblock or *adblockplus and this will cure the bouncing issue.
I can't help you with the minor issue, sorry.
*I had adblockplus on my PC but it stopped working for some reason so I went back to adblock and am having no issues.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try Adblock. What I don't get though is why this just started happening in the last couple if months when I've been using my iPad for over a year and why I don't have this problem on other sites. I saw a thread I would like to read but with almost 400 posts I couldn't take it refreshing every minute or so. Too bad.
The page jumping/loading started for me 6+- months ago. After posting here just as you did someone explained to me what I shared with you, except it was Adblock plus. I downloaded it and it was great till about 2 weeks ago it just stopped working so I uninstalled it and started using Adblock (no plus). Good luck, hope it works I know how annoying it is.
I have the same problems with my iPad 2, except going to the bottom of the page when refreshing.
We're aware of the bouncing issues, though it sounds worse on your iPad Mini than is typical--we're not sure why.
We're also unable to reproduce the other two issues. Without being able to see an issue ourselves, it's difficult to diagnose the cause, but we'll keep an eye on it.
Thanks for your report.
DeborahL, I am experiencing all three of the issues dmjordan is reporting. Using a First Gen Kindle Fire.
The page refreshing happens most often when I am on one of the Board pages, not an individual thread.
The bouncing / waiting for a page to finish loading takes between five and eight seconds and I am loathe to attempt to touch the screen because I will often end up on a page - or ad - that I didn't want.
There are also issues with having CH open in one tab and reading something in another tab. When I return to the CH tab, the page often appears with the mobile display rather than the modified desktop version for the tablets which it had been displaying. And if the page was actually a thread, comments are collapsed. Frustrating.
I read CH on my ipad during quick breaks. My workaround is to let the one page load, then open up posts I want to read in another tab.
Once that main page loads, it's easy to hover and open up posts in the other tab. If I'm done with most of that main page, I'll hit refresh while I'm reading the other open tab.
It's a workaround but I find it a lot less frustrating than waiting for the bouncing to stop everytime I'm finished reading a post and go back out to the main page.
Heck, sometimes I do that when I'm on the laptop anyway. Any post I want to read always open it up in a different tab.
