For those looking for The Creole Chef….

Mattapoisett in LA Mar 3, 2014 11:45 PM

This was a restaurant located in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza which closed a few years ago because of crime. Apparently they are catering the Mardi Gras Celebration at St Bernadette's next Tuesday. Tickets are $55 a piece and can be purchased through the church office.

I saw their name on another event a couple of years ago. Not sure if they do it full time or not.

Their food was terrific. So sad that crime in the area moved them out. Hope they resurface again soon in a better place.

They get jacked or something? It was seriously a terrible loss.

Yes, they got robbed, which happens throughout L.A. but the mall management did not work with them in getting more security patrols since they are in the far corner of the shopping center. Malls aren't exactly quite accomidating for new businesses and honestly, I think it was a case of strong personalities and getting another tenant in there (The Mall has since gone through a pretty big scrubbing in the years since). A catered dinner is NOT the same as a restaurant dinner, but I'm glad they are still in the business somewhat.

Do ay of you live near St. Bernadette's? Just curious, as we live in the Dons up above the church. I'm tempted to go to the event, but the way the church will do it, I'd guess it will be a solid step below getting a good meal at The Chef. I definitely wish they open up another brick & mortar.

They've cleaned the mall up quite a bit. There's also much more security. I don't hesitate at all to go to Post & Beam, or the Rave theatres. They're making slow, but steady progress on the La Casita branch to open in a corner of the main mall itself. It was supposed to open in late 2013, then early 2014, and it looks like it might still be a couple of months off at the construction pace.

Yeah, when Post & Beam by Mr. Govind Armstrong turned up in the Crenshaw Plaza as well as Chipotle, always a sign of upwardly mobile gentrification whether we like it or not, I presume they amped the security beat by 10 fold.

I do remember that Creole Chef was in a forlorn, out of the way stretch of the mall, but even back then which was in the not too distant past it didn't feel oppressively crime-ridden.

Nowadays, in the neighborhood, Harold and Belle's will still do, or back down from Slauson perhaps Orleans and York. I love that buttery hot sauce that will even make a Brillo pad taste like delicious nose candy.

You know Post and Beam is where Creole Chef used to be. They tore down the building to make the new place.

                      I see. My bad.

I'm presuming P and B must have been a solid five times the size of the Creole Chef which was a minuscule joint.

I also miss Bayou Grille (sp?) in Long Beach in the Bixby Knolls stretch of Atlantic Blvd.

I have to apologize, This event was last night. Somehow I had moved it a week in my mind. Well there is always next year.

Yeah, I kept thinking to myself Mardi Gras was yesterday, rather than "next week" meaning a week from yesterday.

                      No worries.

Matt, I don't think Post and Beam is at the exact location or is it when I passed by the other day.

Also, post and beam is 3615 and creole chef was like 3657, or something like that along santa rosalia, unless due to the serious increase in square footage the address changed ?????

              thanks. just curious.

You are right Kevin, I figured it out Creole Chef was where the Staples is now. If you Google Street View 3715 Santa Rosalia Dr Los Angeles, CA 90008 You'll see it.
