Grocery Outlet -- March 2014

Carrying over from last month:

Oakland did not have any of the Straus butter. However they did have the $3.99 Lunatic white wine blend 2011:

"Here are the tasting notes:
2011 Lunatic White Wine Blend
This Lunatic White is intensely aromatic, densely flavored, muscular but supple, graceful and delicate. This wine is full of contradictions and charming mysteries. It is an alliance of the aromatic Symphony, Arneis, Albarino and Viognier on a foundation of richly flavored Chardonnay. Jasmine, apricot, ripe pear and fresh white peach meld in a succulent compote. The wine is much more than the sum of its parts…insanely good!"

I would have to agree that it's very good: aromatic and fruity on the nose and palate, but with a nice bite of acid on the finish to keep it from being too cloying or soft. Really quaffable.

Any comments on the Echelon Russian River Pinot Noir (at $5.99)?

For your pets, they had a good stock of Murr pet food from Iceland, pouches at 50 cents each. I see they sell for about $2/pouch ($24 for a box of 12), so that's a real steal for what looks to be a premium product.

  1. I picked up the Echelon PN but haven't opened it yet. The Echelon "Red" blend is quite good, though.

"Street Pinot", Sonoma County, on the other hand, is an acidic nightmare. Avoid!

    This is in Berkeley.

The Echelon Pinot Noir is ok, not particularly varietal, certainly not typical of the Russian River Valley. I like the red blend better.

This is certainly a generalization on my part, but I avoid the California designated wines at GO since they are usually "not particularly varietal," as you put it.

I've had better success with wines at GO that have a narrower appellation, e.g. Central Coast, Napa Valley, etc. It's not 100% successful, as noted by Ernie's review of the Street Pinot from Sonoma County.

Sidenote: The Geary GO still has the 2002, 2003, & 2004 Blackford "Napa Valley" Cabernets in stock for $9.99.

I had one of the Blackford Cabs (the 2002, I think) a couple of months ago and thought it was quite good.

    2. Berkeley:
Cascadian "O" dry cereal 99 cents a box.
Newmans Peanut Butter cups (six-pack) 49 cents.

      1. Also:

50 cents -- Alter Eco "Mini Dark Velvet" chocolate bars (.7 oz.). 47% cocoa solids (single origin Peru) with just a touch of milk. Fair trade, organic. Velvety and delicious and a nice size (big enough to be satisfying, not big enough to overindulge). Price on their website is $1.69.

Geary (yesterday) had the Straus butter.

There's a Chianti Classico Riserva 2007 for $6.99. Tenuta Poggio Ai Mandorli. Anyone tried it?

        2. Yesterday afternoon at Oakland, lots of Starbuck ice cream @ $1.99/pint -- Java Chip Frappucino & Caramel Macchiato

Can olive oil last that long? Don't they go rancid in a matter of months?

                    1. re: ckshen

Sure. If a bottle is not opened, it won't go rancid that quickly. The flavor does degrade though.
