I'm looking for a good wine bar in Montreal...I'm thinking of a place like Zygomates in Boston or Eos--50 or 60 wines by the glass, a knowledgeable staff who can talk about them, and maybe some interested tapas or munchy food.

A really nice Wine bar I like to go to is called PULLMANS located on Park and Sherbrooke street. They have a nice selection of Wines. The tapas are quite nice as well. I strongly recommend this as a lite dinner restaurant. They have salads, Grilled Vegy's, Crostinis, Aroncini balls stuffed with Rosoto and cheese. They have meat dishes, shrimp, tartar etc.. For dessert try the truffles or the mini cupcakes. If you are looking to really learn about wines I don;t recomend Pulmans I do not find the staff very helpful or informative.

Another nice wine restaurant is called BU its on upper st Laurent. They actually have a larger selection of wines from around the world. The staff was quite knowledgble. I thought the concept for wine tasting was better at BU than Pullmans. However, I liked the food better at Pullmans. Its better not to judge BU by the food its a hit or miss with what you order they change there menu often.

Alyson, I'm pretty sure Anon John is no longer on his quest. There are recent threads on this topic where your info would be more useful for all.

Drat! Didn't notice the date. CH really ought to lock old threads after a few years of inactivity. Not doing so leads to wasted time by well-meaning but unobservant posters plus fragments discussion even more than usual.

My favourite bar is Bouchonné. Tiny, warm décor, 30 or so wines (many private imports, many of them organic/biodynamic, mainly from small producers). Tasty small dishes. Plus they're reportedly moving to bigger digs, so soak up the ambiance while you can... www.bouchonne.com

Les 3 Petits Bouchons is a little more restauranty, more slickly decorated but similar in orientation. http://troispetitsbouchons.com/

Old Montreal's Aszu sounds closer in concept to Zygomates. Good but lacking the funky appeal and esoteric wine lists of the first two. www.aszu.ca

BU is cool. The staff is knowledgeable but often too busy to provide more than cursory descriptions. The by-the-glass selection changes weekly and could be larger but is often interesting, plus they offer blind flights. The wine cellar is stuffed with appealing bottles. The food is always serviceable, sometimes more. www.bu-mtl.com/intro.php

Pullman is my least favourite of the bunch. The food is really uneven. The by-the-glass list seldom excites me. The chandelier aside, I find the decor to be slick, dark, cramped and generally uncomfortable (the newly opened back room is better). The staff is uncommunicative. The sound system is often set loud enough to make conversation difficult. www.pullman-mtl.com

There are a few others -- Pop! (great food), Buvette à Simone, Chesterfield, etc. -- but they're less along the lines of what you're looking for.
