My Tan W Broadway Vancouver

There was a little dive on W Broadway in the late 70's, I believe called My Tan, unlicensed - hot tea in glasses, but an amazing platefull of food for cheap. We used to order the combination plate. They moved down the street on the other side in the 80's, got bigger & licensed, but the food went downhill. I am trying to remember what ethnicity it was so I can try to find something similar. I thought it might have been Korean, but haven't found anything like it since. Anyone??

  1. What part pf Broadway ?

Rings a bell, but barely. I'm quite sure it was not a tanning salon ;-)

It was one of the first Vietnamese joints in the city IIRC.

    2. it was Vietnamese and I am so happy that you remember it, too.

the meat sauce on the rice. 'member that?
so good. steamy windows on cold nights. that place was fantastic.

      1. YES! someone who remembers!
So why can't I find that type of cooking? All the Vietnamese places are pho, curry with noodles, or meat with salad on rice.
        I'm actually in Calgary

Phnom Penh in Chinatown is Viet/Cambodian and has stayed the course since the '80s. While I wouldn't call them cheap, they're not as "predictable" as your typical pho joints (menu has a few pho, but not pages of them).

Parkles: meat sauce on rice, is that beef au concasse ?

you know, i am not sure.
i have made a pale imitation using tomatoes, coconut milk and a few aromatics but it's not what i remember (but whatever is?).

i will check out Phnom Penh. i've heard lots about it.
            thanks!
