Brooklyn Tavern - your thoughts?

Just wondering if any CH'ers have been and if so, what did you think?

We went once just shortly after they opened and it was okay but nothing really worth returning for. I think they recently got a good review in the one of the weekend papers which made me question whether we went too early and should give them another try.

I haven't seem much here about them so I thought I'd ask.....

  1. They have incredible creme brule french toast. And apparently their steak is fantastic as well. Overall, I'd have to say that the food is pretty good!!

      Well then maybe a return visit is in order.

      Not crazy about french toast so perhaps we'll try a weeknight dinner sometime soon.

      Problem is, I can't resist Enoteca Ascari so its usually my go to.

        That happens to me so often. I have plans to go to a certain restaurant, but then a favourite restaurant just calls my name...over and over...and I end up forgoing the intended restaurant :)

        Well, when you do end up going, make sure that you report back :)

    2. Went on a Friday night a few weeks ago. Made a reservation and was disappointed to be seated at a high top bar table that wobbled. Bar stools with no seat backs didn't induce a relaxing dinner seating. Service was friendly, but I got the sense they were a bit overwhelmed. I liked the menu - some different options - a bit heavy on pork, with kind of a south american feel - but I like meat and was interested in something different. All three of us agreed that our food was good but definitely not excellent. Good selection of reasonably price wine, beer and cocktails. Nice atmosphere. Might be worth another try. I have a similar issue of always returning to my faves. Love Edward Levesque - just down the road.

      1. Two brunch visits so far and both were just ok. On the first visit has the sun chock has with pork. It was one note in terms of flavour as the sun chock overwhelmed the dish. The pork in the dish was virtually non existent and the egg, was well a sunny side up egg. Nothing exciting.

        Went again this Sunday and tried the "brule" French toast - burnt French toast would have been much more fitting. I don't like whipped cream and didn't ask what the vanilla cream was only to have it come with giant helping of the evil whipped stuff. That I could have overlooked if the brule wasn't black and charred.

        I may give it a shot for dinner but so far not so impressive to say the least.

          that's too bad as it's super close to me and some friends wanted to do brunch soon.

          i've just been the once and the food wasn't something that had me wanting more.

            Yes too bad indeed.

            I can't remember which one, but one of our critics gave it a glowing review re dinner which is why I asked.

            Our one brunch visit was quite non descript.
