traveling and dining solo in Montreal

I'm leaving next week and know this is really last minute, but I just found this site.
I'm a 24 yr old female, traveling alone to Montreal and Quebec for a week. I was hoping someone could recommend restaurants that don't cost a fortune, and have a good atmosphere where I could talk to strangers and not care that I'm dining alone.
And on a side note, I know drinking alone in NYC is never safe with all these wackos drugging women, will I be okay having a drink by myself in Montreal?
Thanks for any help and advice.
I'm not much on the singles scene in Montreal, but you'll find the streets much safer than here in the States. One of my favorite, less expensive locations is La Bistro Gourmet, on St. Mathieu, between Sherbrooke and St. Catherine... We love to sit outside there and watch everyone walk by. Very friendly, and very reasonably priced for what you get. My wife swears they have the best muscles there... BTW, you may bump into me Monday or Tuesday night. My son and I are making the trip to start getting him ready for McGill :)
