What do you think about the vaginal infection ad?

I saw an ad on Chowhound for...well, I'm not sure for what exactly. Picture of woman with line "Its an infection....Is it?" with a logo for Vag-something.
I don't really care what kind of ad space CH sells, but I'm curious whats next? Scrotum rash ads on the Food Quest board or maybe anus itch relief on the Home Cooking board?

  1. Fold them together into one Tupperware style party and you could have quite a conga line!

Don't get started on my 1950s era Tupperware party fantasy.

    2. AdBlock Plus is your friend. I can't believe how many times I've had to say this.

Seriously. It's free, it downloads in no time.... et voilá: no more ads. None. Zippo. Zilch.

      It's a brave new world.

Oh, you're welcome. It's made my life online just ever-so-slightly happier '-)

          1. re: linguafood

My eyes are well trained not even to notice ads. But the feature I have to block spam and unwanted e-mails is like a gift from heaven.

            1. re: linguafood

I just installed the Chrome version. Our internet connection is a mobile hotspot with a data package. Video ads have been annoying me immmensely as they just suck data. Thanks for the reminder.

          2. re: linguafood

Ghostery, too. Use it in conjunction with ABP for the ultimate ad and tracker free browsing experience. You'll never even know they were there.

And of course, you should use a real browser. Firefox or Chrome. Friends don't let friends browse with IE.

              1. re: davis_sq_pro

Just installed that also. Thanks! This old broad is learning new tricks :)

                1. re: davis_sq_pro

I use chrome, but I don't see infected vagina ads. I guess I am missing out?

                  1. re: sedimental

Perhaps your ads haven't become infected yet?

                2. re: linguafood

I love AdBlock Plus. I often forget I have it and then wondered what these people are dreaming about on the side of the page.

                  1. re: fldhkybnva

I only installed it (finally) yesterday and my internet world is a happier world :)

                      1. re: LindaWhit

That and facebook purity script are musts. You will live in an ad free world at least on your pc.

                  2. re: linguafood

Let me ask you Lingqua, or anyone else kind enough to respond, as you can see in this screen shot I have ABP installed in my browser bar and I hovered over it to show it is enabled for this page.

Why then is there a Verizon Fios banner ad at the top my page? Also not shown there is also an Expedia block ad half way down the page on the right side between the New Discussion blue button and Trending Now. Shouldn't these be blocked?

                    1. re: jrvedivici

Please ask the developer of the program, jr. I have no clue how this works, but I haven't had a single ad for anything anywhere on the interwebz.

                      1. re: linguafood

Ok, just figured I would ask. Thanks!

                        1. re: linguafood

Interestingly enough, I just downloaded adblocker, not adblocker plus and it's working again. Both are in my browser bar, but just the adblocker seems to be working which is fine with me!

                      2. re: linguafood

Thanks for the adblock tip! Just installed it into Google Chrome. Why did I not know about this sooner!?!?! I'm actually surprised Google allows it to be installed in Chrome.

                      3. Since I'm guessing that over 50% of CHs actually have vaginas, it seems like a smart move on their part. And if you have a problem with it, just follow linguafood's advice. Easy peasy.

Nah, I don't have a problem...it was basically an easy, legitimate excuse to use great words like infection, vagina, scrotum, anus, etc on CH.

                          1. re: porker

That's why I replied also :) Some folks around here get uncomfortable with even the word "vagina" :)

                            1. re: c oliver

I actually like making people uncomfortable with like words!

                              1. re: porker

The Vagina Monologues is a great play that is regularly produced on Valentines Day every year. Eve Ensler was brilliant.

                        2. I'm usually viewing on Firefox with adblock on, but when I view on IE, I can't say I've seen those ads. I see plenty of other ads though.

However, I have a friend who runs a website and gets his revenue from ad-clicks, and I remember him telling me that most of the ad software out there has been programmed to read...something (cookies, search engine history, internet history) to customize the ads to be most likely of interest to that user. So the ads I see when I visit the site will not be the same ads you see.

So...clearly something about your internet viewing habits must just say "vaginal infection". I would get that checked out by a doctor, if I were you.

Your friend was talking about "flash cookies" or LSO's - there's a Firefox add-on called BetterPrivacy that will handle those for you. Similarly, an add-on called Priv3 prevents social media sites from being able to track your internet usage while you are logged in to their service.

                            2. I say "right on"! Who's not down with infection-free vaginas?

At least not until the Viagra kicks in.

Exactly. My internet ads are all about cars, on account of some research I was doing for an upcoming purchase. Someone *really* thinks I want a jeep.

Can't install ad blocker on work computer..

I'm loving no ads more than I thought I would. Sorry I didn't do it sooner.

                                    3. I love Adblock on my macbook but I have an ipad2 and I haven't braved updating to ios7. Does anyone have a link to adblock for ipads that doesn't require ios7 by chance?

Good to know grampart. Last time I updated ios on my ipad I lost access to my personal email and my system password no longer worked. It took 2 days and several calls to Apple to finally sort things out. I travel frequently and on that occasion I upgraded on the eve of a one month international trip. I was counting on my ipad to keep me connected with home and needless to say, the issues associated with the "upgrade" prevented me from doing so.

                                          So now I'm sceptical.

                                      2. There's a Rob Ford joke here somewhere.

                                        1. I was going to submit that I find these types of ads, especially on Chowhound, tasteless.

But then again, maybe this should be on the beer or bread making threads.

I have Ad Block Plus, NoScript and Ghostery all installed on Firefox. They sometime fight with each other but I am happy to have all bases covered.
