My wife and I are going to Montreal via the train from Albany,NY in a couple of weeks. Can anyone reccommend a not to fancy hotel? The Auberge du Vieux-Port sounded nice but it's booked. Easy access to the YMCA would be nice as I'm going to enter a 5K there on the 29th.

    Its in front of a great park in a neighbourhood called Le Plateau which is the In place to be.

    1. Gouvernour (a chain?) Place DuPuis is where we've made our reservations. It appears to be convienient to the Metro and it's near the YMCA. I'm going to run a 5K footrace there the 29th. I'm really looking forward to doing some serious eating. I read an earlier post about greasy fries covered with cheese curds and chicken gravy; that's me!!

        That would be a very appropriate meal, since during the race you'll be "poutine" one foot in front of the other!

          I ate poutine, at Denos, on St.Denis, south of St.Catherine, I loved it. Denos is a small reasonably priced restaurant where we got good food set in front of us. We ate three meals there.

          Near the Maisonnuve Market, after viewing a fountain with a bronze statue of a woman (going to the market?) we went into a small and shabby diner that advertized poutine on a chalkboard. We were served poutine made with mozerella instead of cheddar. I'm sure that's some kind of sacrilage. After we were eating I relized the waitress and cook were watching a soap opera in english. What would they know about poutine?

          Taking the advice of Martin Cohen, posted on 4 January 2000, we went to La Binerie on Mount Royal and tried the tourtiere, feves au lard, ragout de boulettes and pouding chomeur for desert. Is lard the Quebecois national vegetable? My arteries are shot for sure. Montreal was great. I enjoyed the different food, the people, the place and it's history.

            Lard is not a vegetable at all.
            It'a the grease caming from the pork.
            It replace butter in cooking.

            And it's giving a touch of different taste to the meal.

              Speaking of Le Binerie... I went there for breakfast last time I was in Montreal, and tried their baked beans...

              VERY odd.

              I mean, I'm used to New England-style baked beans, and these were SO unlike anything I'd had before. It seems they were baked without molasses. They were somewhat tasteless.

              But I noticed a bottle of molasses on the table. Now, is one supposed to ADD the mollasses AFTER they've been served to you? Or maybe maple syrup? How exactly are Montreal-style beans supposed to be eaten?

            i'm thinking of making the same trip later this month. what train did you take? how long was the trip? how much did it cost?

              We took the Lake Shore (I think) from Syracuse to Schenectady and waited two hours there for the Adirondack. I'd say it was about an eleven hour trip. My wife had a $200 Amtrack gift certificate; we got change from that. There was an off-season special going on at the time. You can get available trains and fares off Amtrack's website.

              I like train travel. It's nice to look at the scenery or just relax with a book. There was a 'snack car' and on the US side of the trip you can get a drink. You might even find a friendly card game if you are so inclined. You may also find yourself sitting next to a crazy woman on a crowded train. There might be a loud and obnoxious boor in the car who's voice you can't escape. Both pitfalls happened to me on this trip but I'd still do it again.
