Thai with a twist
Here's a great Thai restaurant with a twist. It's completely vegetarian, but the food is prepared to simulate meat dishes, by using tofu and seitan. I've been there twice, and can't believe how unbelievably tasty their dishes are. The textures, the sauces and the spices are mouth-watering. I've had "chicken, fish and shrimp" dishes so far, each one was just delicious. The prices are quite low for the quantity and quality of the food, and I had the same smiling, helpfull waiter both times I've been there, which was about a year apart. It's called Chu Chai. I'm sorry I don't have the exact address, but it's on the west side of St. Denis. (I'm pretty sure it's north of Deluth, south of Rachel)

Hey, are you sure these guys aren't Chinese, by the way? Sounds a lot like Chinese Buddhist veg...though I know nothing at all about Thai Buddhist veg cuisine (and suspect there's someone out there who can write up a major treatise for us on the subject!)

I was there last summer with a vegetarian who was VERY skeptical about "faux meat"--we both ended up loving it and wishing we hadn't waited until our last night in town to eat there. I had a "fish" dish that was amazing, the texture was perfect and the seasonings were heavenly. The restaurant is definitely run by Thais, by the way, as the servers were speaking Thai to each other and not Chinese. I'm going back to Montreal next week for the F1 Grand Prix and I'll be eating at Chuchai more than once!
