Singapore Malaysian closed -- to be taken over by The Lime Tree [San Francisco]

Strolling down Clement St. today for the first time in a while I noticed Singapore Malaysian Restaurant's windows papered over and work going on inside. There was an ABC notice of license transfer to The Lime Tree in the window, and I was informed by one of the workers that this will be a second location of The Lime Tree.

  1. Wow, this is great news for Ming and his crew. I hope that he has an opportunity to expand his menu with a larger kitchen. (Such a nice nice guy with inexpensive, tasty food!)

    1. This saddens me. I loved Singapore Malaysian and the family that ran it. I have many happy memories eating here, particularly one night: January 22, 1992. They had the best Roti Prata, Javanese fried chicken, green beans, etc.

Understandably. Was that date opening night for Singapore Malaysian? They've had a solid run. (I looked up the liquor license and see that it was issued in March 1992).

We had our first SF chowhound dinner and winedown there on February 28, 2001.

My first meal at Singapore Malaysian was sometime in the late 80s, years before that memorable dinner. I don't know exactly when they opened.

I talked to my boyfriend and he thinks I'm misremembering the approximate year that they opened, and he thinks it's actually 1990 or so, not the late 80s.

You may be thinking of the original Straits Cafe on Geary which definitely was around in the late 80s.
