Fujinoya Harstdale Downhill Alert?

I was by Fujinoya on Central Ave the other day. The first time since the had new owners take over almost a year ago. I found that both quality and serving size were worse. Sushi/sashimi selection was much less, and lessor quality. Just not that flavorful. I am a traditionalist so I had mostly sashimi with some nigiri, no maki. Also the lunch special was mediocre, not enough food. Very small portions, including the white rice. Back before thhi visit the lunch special, both daily, and the you pick bento box, was fillling. This time I ate everything and was still so hungry that a few minutes later I ordered a full sushi/sashimi meal, plus extra, and still left hungry.

Who has been lately and what are your thoughts?

  1. I've been a regular at lunch & dinner for 7-8 years. Since the ownership change, the portions have gotten a bit smaller and the lunch specials are more ordinary. The quality of the fish is the same as before. I like how they have expanded the menu. I was a bit spoiled by the previous owner in terms of getting some free extras without asking. They still occupy a unique niche in the Westchester Japanese scene.

I should restate, the fish was fresh, but flavorless. Kept in water, or farmed fish. Something just wasn't there. No sweet fish taste, no hint of marine, nothing. Just totally boring sashimi.

    2. I agree with you. I have been a few times since they changed ownership and the quality and portion sizes have gone down. I just mentioned to my wife that this place jumped the shark.
