Supermarket to buy shishamo (Japanese smelt fish) in San Jose area?

We want to fry up at home. Marukai (Cupertino) has them but small pack and ripoff. Anywhere else? Tried two Hankook supermarkets and two 99 Ranches. Zip.

Thanks for any tips!

  1. Have you tried looking at Nijiya in Mountain View or Mitsuwa in San Jose?

Nijiya in Japantown did not have any on display Saturday

I've found that the Japantown location has a more limited selection than the MV one, probably due to size constraints.

I'll check Nijiya, never think to check them as smaller. I checked Mitsuwa. Thank you!

    2. During the summer, Maxim had local surf smelt

      1. I've seen fresh smelt at whole foods in Cupertino on Sunday

I wonder if the Whole Foods smelt is the traditional Japanese variety (with eggs inside the belly)??

no -they were already cleaned with the head off...but under $8 a pound - I sauteed some with ghee, garlic for breakfast - delish!
