cooking classes for young adults in RTP area

My son is looking for a class on basic cooking skills for a young adult in the RTP area. Not a culinary arts degree program at the community college or a one-off wine pairing class but a class that will give an introduction to the life-skills needed to cook for himself.

  1. One place to start is looking at what is available class-wise at Southern Season. Not sure how old your son is, but they offer a lot of different things. Whenever I find one that my 7 year old (definitely not young adult) and I can make it to, we go. I think there are a few other places that offer classes closer to Raleigh, if you're on that end of the Triangle.

    Do you cook? I find that having my daughter help with dinner has gotten her very interested in the process. You can easily teach him a couple of pastas, scrambled eggs and omelets, a roast chicken to get him started.

      Thanks. I have pointed him to the individual classes at Whisk in Cary and Southern Season. I think he is looking for more along the lines of an introductory survey or basic cooking techniques and skills. He is 17 and looking to gain life skills in the months before he leaves for college. Very self-motivated so instruction from Mom would not fit his visions for self-improvement.

        Yeah I would say the knife skills class is always good to know and then its a matter of what he wants to learn. Of course, he could save himself a lot of money and take out books from library like All About Roasting (Mollie Stevens I think) or Roasting by Barbara Kafka or just whatever technique he is looking to learn. You wanna learn to fry a chicken.. read up on it. Stir Frying same thing. I like to bake so I consume a lot of books or recipes on baking and then just go to it. He is still at home. Challenge him to make dinner for himself and you or just for himself and MOST importantly show him what he can do with leftovers to make a nother dish. Thats something a lot of classes won't teach.. ANYWAYS..

        Maybe C'est Ci Bon
        Sur La Table (though this and Southern Season tend to be wine paired look at us cook with some exceptions like the aforementioned knife skills class).

        That being said he needs to know what space and cooking instruments will be available to him at college.

          We sent my daughter to C'est Ci Bon over the summer. It was a well run program. I would like to take classes there myself. I'm not sure it's right for the OP's kid, but we're sending our 10 year-old back this summer.

          That said, a good knife and a big bag of onions taught Julia Child a lot about knife work.

            Tom, which class will your daughter be in at C'est Si Bon this summer? I just signed Lulu up for two weeks and I'm jealous - it looks like an incredible experience. Lulu is beside herself with excitement.

            The knife skills class is definitely a good one. Not sure I was the best student in the world, but I learned the right way to do it (in other words, I don't always do it the right way).

      2. Chef Wynton Mann teaches many different classes through the Town of Cary Parks & Rec program. My wife & I took his knife skills class together and recommend that class. He's teaching "Basics of Cooking I" in four 2-1/2 hour sessions and then part II in four more sessions. Ages 16+. See pages 59-60 in the January-May booklet at this link

          Good tip, which reminds me that I think Carrboro Parks and Rec does something similar.

        2. Don't need to take a knife skills class. Buy him a nice, reasonably priced Forschner chef's knife that he can use to follow along video tutorials on knife skills on Youtube or elsewhere online.

          They haven't announced any classes yet but The Cookery in Durham offers some interesting cooking classes taught by local chefs and food purveyors.

          1. Perhaps 'Lil Chef in Raleigh (North Hills) though it may skew a little younger. Their website lists all of the classes, so might take a look there.
