Help finding Italian

Joez63 Feb 16, 2014 05:43 AM

We will be visiting our Daughter at College (SJU), she would like to go out for Italian . We are looking for a casual Restaurant, it can be a Mom and Pop or Pizza with good pasta. She needs a break from Cafeteria food. We are looking for some place open early on Sundays. Thanks

I totally agree that if you are driving into the city you can do much better than Birra. But you don't need to drive into the city, there happens to be a very good, small Italian BYOB pretty close to St. Joe's, in East Falls, Fiorino (http://www.fiorino.us/). Their gnocchi are especially good.

I would go for La Collina in Bala Cynwyd. It's not too far from SJU and they open at 4:30 on Sunday

          Will you have a car?
What do you mean by early?
          We'll try to help.

If youre going to drive into the city from SJU you can do a lot better than that. For example, Nomad Pizza and Zavino are open Sunday afternoons. I'd say Nomad has the edge on pizza but the pasta dishes are better at Zavino. Nomad may not always serve pasta actually, but usually some sort of pasta is on special. Nomad also has a newish spot near Zavino serving Roman-style pizza, it's also good though I think I prefer the original Neopolitan.

For Italian that's a little different but fun, Alla Spina is open then too.

All of these places are open from at least noon all the way through dinner. If you do Zavino or Nomad Roman you are also right in the middle of Center City and if the weather is nice, you could stroll around which could be a nice way to spend some additional time.
