Valentine's day donuts @ Brookfield Place

Did anyone score one of these unforgettably delicious donuts? And if so, do you know who made them? The packaging didn't seem to indicate a bakery name and I must have more! PS they were free and being given away in the lobby.

Laughing at (with) the exuberance!! : )

I wish I could help out. Unfortunately it appears they didn't market the event let alone the doughnut supplier.

        1. re: justsayn

          ha gotcha!

    2. Honestly guys, who makes something awesome and hands out thousands of wicked delicious donut delights to Canadians no less, and does it anonymously? Why don't you want me to buy your stuff? And rave to my friends? WHY??? In a pretty box no less. Seriously.

            We're getting closer!

            1. re: justsayn

How on earth did you even find that justsayn?

          Hmmmmm ....who indeed?

          1. re: petek

            KK probably...if not it's the 7-11 source.

            1. re: justsayn

Who else could afford to do that. I was gonna say Tim Hortons but the donut looks way better than any TH donut I've ever seen.

              1. re: petek

Exactly. Plus I have never known them to lose out on a branding opportunity.....ever.

                1. re: justsayn

Interesting..I wonder if KK is trying to make a comeback up here?

                2. re: petek

It was like a gourmet Krispy Kreme in the glaze department, but a heavier, chewier donut. But yet still delicate. Hands down not Timmy's.

                  1. re: tara100299

Well whoever it is, they've succeed in creating quite the buzz, they've got 4 people talking about it already! Brilliant marketing! :D

          2. why don't you call Brookfield Place property management and ask them?

But what if they're in on this secret marketing thing, then what? :D

              1. re: millygirl

I just called...you can only leave a message if it's not an emergency...but it IS a donut 911!

              2. My guess is it was Jelly Modern. They have tweeted numerous times that their largest Valentine's order was for 12,000 doughnuts.
Start your search by calling and asking them.

Guessing? That's crazy talk! Ain't nobody got time fo' that! This is a donut EMERGENCY!
But seriously though you're probably right. :)

                  1. re: petek

If I were experiencing a doughnut emergency I would immediately get myself to VON! They will be at least as good as what was given out this morning.

                    1. re: cheesymama

Thankfully VON is in my hood. I meant to get there last weekend...truthfully, it's less of a stomach/craving emergency and more of a "But why is this a secret donut?" emergency. Inquiring minds need to know and all that.

                      1. re: cheesymama

Cheesymama for the win! I sent my friend down to Brookfield's office, they were from Jelly Modern, the reason for no branding? Because Brookfield paid for the haul. So I guess they didn't want to advertise anything other than their own generosity! And fair enough....phew! But otherwise that was a fun mystery.

                    2. re: cheesymama

                      Looks familiar https://www.facebook.com/jellymodernd...

                      Nice one!

                      1. re: justsayn

I agree, the filled hole thing seems to be their flair...my friend says he had one that was jelly filled.

                        1. re: justsayn

Well that mystery didn't last very long did it?
                          Way to go cheesymama!

                          1. re: petek

Silly they didn't include their name?

                            1. re: justsayn

Maybe it was part of the deal they made with Brookfield Place no branding allowed but they still bought thousands of d-nuts..

                              1. re: petek

I bet its because they didn't want to piss off the non-JM tenants...or worse, break the lease agreements.

                          2. re: justsayn

Amazing detective work justsayn! I'm totally impressed :)

Sorry to burst your bubble kwass..but it was Detective cheesymama who broke this case wide open...

                              1. re: petek

Oops. I thought it was her guess, but justsayn found the evidence. Either way, kudos to both :)

                                1. re: kwass

                                  Huzzah!! :)

                        2. KWASS ALERT!!!!! You may wish to try JM's plain glaze!! Looks like they may be making improvements??

                          2. Hey! I work in a Brookfield building downtown too, but my building didn't get any donuts!? And that really stings...where's the love, Brookfield? ;)

                            1. This is why I think Jelly Modern will do well in this city.. Eh have figured out how to get the corporate orders and they have the capacity to handle it

That has to be the only reason they'll do well. It can't be because they put out good doughnuts.!

                                1. re: kwass

Every business has to find it's niche, corporate vs neighborhood, high end vs low end quantity over quality etc...
I haven't been to MJ so I can't speak on the quality of their donuts but they can't be that bad if someone ordered a couple thousand from them.

                                  1. re: petek

I've had almost all of the "gourmet" doughnuts in the city - VON, GHD, Emma's Country Kitchen, Rachelle's, Through Being Cool, and JMD, and JMD is by far the worst of the bunch. So, I'm not sure why someone is ordering a couple of thousand if them. Maybe they have a really good PR/sales team.

P.S I apologize if I'm coming off as having attitude. That's not my intention. I'm just trying to explain where I'm coming from.

                                    1. re: kwass

No need to apologize. I didn't detect a hint of attitude on your part.
You like what you like, and boy do you like your donuts! :D Like ylsf said, they got the business because they could handle the volume at the right price point.

Aside from GHD I haven't tried any of the other places you've mentioned(trying to drop a few lbs) but VON is definitely on my list.

I definitely do like my doughnuts :)

And yes, you must try VON!

                                        1. re: kwass

We had Von again today. Very good. Chocolate
Hazelnut. Crisp on the outside. Fudgey cake like on the inside. And not too too sweet. Vontastic!

They only had a few left to chose from at 430 today so best to go early.

                                          1. re: millygirl

Chocolate!! Great to hear! Thanks! That is the flavour that was lacking from their selection.

                                            1. re: millygirl

I love that millygirl! Vontastic...lol!!! I'm going to start using that! But i'll make sure that u give you credit for it :)

                                              1. re: millygirl

Is that the "Wake Me Up" with mocha ganache (and hazelnuts)? I had it today too - totally with you on "VONtastic"!!! - I absolutely loved it and second your description.

I was also thrilled with the lemon one, swooned over the heart-shaped creme brûlée, and enjoyed the strawberry, blueberry, Greektown, and the French toast kebab.

What an amazing place! I am so grateful for all the posts - without this outpouring of enthusiasm I doubt I would have tried it.

                                                1. re: Klafouti

Yup, same one. You could really taste the toasted nuts. They know what they're doing there. Excellent quality and well worth the price.

                                  2. Ok, I loved the JM plain glazed donut. I went to the store and had some other selections Saturday, they didn't have the plain glaze- then we hit Von on Sunday. Von is superior, both is freshness, selection and Customer Service. Now I probably won't have another donut this year.

VON is by far one of the best new places in Toronto!
