Valentine's Day 2014

Where did you go (food shop/restaurant), what did you eat, and was it everything you hoped it would be?

  1. We are having dungeness crab, and wine and veggies and bread at home as we've discovered Valentine's Day at a restaurant is a whole new level of challenge, cost and sport.

And I felt awfully less wussy, even vindicated, after reading this -

BTW - my husband is still buying me ice cream for lunch - I'm only human : )

Hahaha! I don't have dinner plans, but my husband and I are going out for lunch. I also have a bunch of treats on order, so I'll be commenting later.

      1. re: Full tummy

Lunch...what I great idea!! I don't know why more people don't do that. You get to avoid the crowds, and the exorbitant mark ups, not to mention the Valentine's Day menus :)

        1. re: kwass

Exactly! Right now, we both work from home, so it probably works better for us than for others. Also, during the day, our three-year-old is at school, so no need to get a babysitter!

    2. My SO is working for other couples tonight. :) So I'll be having a waldorf salad, lobster and a lemon tart with mini firefly and my parents at home. I'm hoping for a nice bottle of wine around midnight though when the SO gets home! :)

Homemade lemon tart or from a bakery?

        1. re: Full tummy

My lemon tart. I made it lastnight so super easy prep for post kindergarten activities.

        2. My DH is out of town tonight, so last night I gave him a huge bag from Soma, heavy on the "Old School" chocolate bars. Fortunately he will share.
We also made reservations at Bero for a belated Valentine's dinner.

          1. I just dropped my last penny at Hooked...picking up some pre-shocked oysters from Oyster Boy (with all the trimmings - these guys are AWESOME), and a couple of Littorai Chard are ready to be cracked open.
My beau (and more importantly, my tummy) is a lucky SOB!

            1. We had takeout from sushi2go (5 funky rolls), with Antica Formula Vermouth, Chateau des Charmes Brut Rose MC 2010 VQA NOTL, Stoney Ridge Excellence Chardonnay 2010 VQA Lakeshore, and a St. Emilion, also with chicken livers in a haggis mode with steel-cut oats that my wife made.

Leftovers tomorrow, including the wine...and yes, we had all our clothes on.

              1. We also did takeout sushi. A yam tempura roll, various nigiri sushi. A nice Viognier and some vanilla Haagen Das. (On sale at Metro). Mr. Vuitton is now snoozing on the couch. :).
We are just both really happy the week is over. Foe 72 hours...

                1. We went to Tori's Bakeshop for the smoked coconut "BLT" and a few treats. Love that sandwich!

Sounds as though none of us are filling the restaurants tonight, but I'm curious to hear from Hounds that did. Is Valentine's Day better or worse than the 'Licious events so many complain about, or did you get the stellar service and food you paid for?

                  1. My SO went to the Cheese Boutique and picked up prosciutto di parma, heirloom tomatoes, mini bocconcini, kalamata olives, duck and pistachio pate, 40 day dry aged striploin, and other goodies. We opened up a good bottle of wine and took our time devouring our goodies.

Sounds like quite the feast. We need an East end CB.

                    2. For lunch, I had the chicken souvlaki at Asteria, 1.5 VON Doughnuts and a cappuccino at Si.
For dinner, I shared Pizze Pide's lahmacun and assorted pide with some friends, then shared Lalibela's veg platter and meat platter.

                      1. re: prima

Yes! Find a restaurant where the hordes are not likely to go. Were Pizza Pide and Lalibela as good as usual?

                        1. re: Full tummy

First time visiting both, food was good at both. We were able to get a table for 4 at Pizze Pide at 6:30, but all tables were full by 7:15. Lalibela had room for our table of 3 when we got there, just before 8. Lalibela had Valentine's decorations on the door and tables.

                      2. The Black Hoof. This year and every year. it's our tradition.

we had the pork heart pastrami and the beef heart steak frites. both excellent.
the whole dinner was great, as per usual.

                        1. The Whippoorwill with girlfriends - wonderful as always! Regular menu with a few Valentine's Day specials (like buck-a-shuck oysters). It was a great choice.

                          1. Patrick (the owner of Starfish) tweeted that they broke a record this Valentines Day!

                            They had 40 no-shows!

That doesn't seem feasible. Maybe he was sabotaged by a competitor, or has an incompetent host/hostess.

                              1. re: justxpete

One of my friends with the gift of the gab always says 'don't let the truth get in the way of a good story'. While I'm not saying this is the case with Patrick, I take most of what I read on Twitter with a grain of salt.

                                1. re: prima

I'd think that the no-show problem could be worst on Feb 14, when many people may make reservations at multiple places and than cancel one or more. I'd never do that, but it appears this is becoming more common.

                                  1. re: foodyDudey

I can't even begin to understand why anyone would employ this logic. Why would anyone but the most ignorant of individuals make reservations at multiple restaurants on the same evening? And to think that this is common, is simply incomprehensible to me.

                                  2. re: prima

Perhaps. 40 seems so far fetchedm though. Maybe they had a reso for 30 or 40 and then had 5 pairs of no-shows. That's in the realm of possibility - but 20 pairs 'no-showing' hardly seems possible.

                                    1. re: justxpete

If you look below at the post from the couple that went to Chantecler.. they stated: "A waiter told us they had a lot of no shows though. Apparently Vday is huge for that"...

Some people do not go out as only "Pairs" you can have two couples or even a group of 8 or 10 on Valentines just like any other night.

There is no benefit for Patrick to make this up as it does not help ones business to complain about customers..

                                  3. re: justxpete

also, some book valentines day months in advance then just forget, change their mind in that time or simply have broken up.

                                    1. re: KhaoSanRoad

Most places call me to confirm my reso (in the rare instances that I make them) the day before.

Also, if I decide to cancel a reso, I call them and let them know.

                                      1. re: justxpete

Yes, any appointment made months in advance needs confirmation close to the date.

                                        1. re: Full tummy

Any reservation I place no matter when is often confirmed the day before.

                                  4. re: pourboi

That is crazy. Why is VD so bad for no shows? Does Starfish require a credit card to hold the table?

                                    1. re: Full tummy

They didn't before.. Here was his actual tweet:

New record! 40 ppl no shows on VDay! So don't be surprised when restaurants ask for CreditCard to book tables.

                                  5. Wife and I had a quiet lunch at Origin North which wasn't bad and then went grocery shopping to make lobster/mushroom risotto and lobster cappuccino. Also picked up a creme brûlée from Pusateri. It was a lot of work but everything turned out great and we have lots of leftovers.

                                    1. We had a late reso to Chantecler. Great meal - had the lettuce meal w/ an extra duck confit leg we added, oyster shots and their popcorn shrimp. Service was great as usual. We love this place. The place was still rammed when we left at midnight!

A waiter told us they had a lot of no shows though. Apparently Vday is huge for that

                                      1. We don't usually go out on Valentine's as I figure it's one of the worst days to do so. I usually cook dinner but didn't get a chance to do that as I was on my way back from Montreal. We go out once or twice in the week after V.D. as my birthday is a few days after. I'm still deciding where to go. I had a good dinner on Thursday at LE MAS DES OLIVIERS. http://www.lemasdesoliviers.ca/

                                        1. We had a nice and cozy evening with takeout veal sandwiches from Tomassos. Perfect night and glad to just get comfy.

For tonight, we picked up some oysters Rockefeller from Summerhill market, huge strawberries and hubby made his famous gravvlox which we are just about to dig in to. Life is good.

Sounds yummy. I like that Valentine's spilled over to today!

                                          2. Made the SO Rack of Lamb from Pete's Meat (we're in Van right now) which was great and rivaled the lamb from Cumbrae's, truffle risotto, Chocolates from Chocolate Art which are amazing (I'm eating more of them than she, which, umm, happens), and we drank an 06 Le Vigne Sandrone Barolo, an 09 La Vieux Pin Equinox Syrah from BC, and had some sparkling Sake (a personal fav of ours).

                                            1. My friends and I ordered a heart-shaped pizza from Pizza Pizza and washed it down with beer. It was perfect.
