Flushing - a little food crawl with Chow-friends

Pikawicca, fourunder, Bob and I all headed to Flushing this morning Fourunder was our driver and tour guide, even down to the bottles of water he had in the car for us :)

We started at Jade Asian where we had chicken feet, bean curd wrappers stuffed with vegetables, fried taro balls, beef in rice flour rolls, spare ribs, a scallop in an open dumpling thingie that I'd not had before, a shrimp wrapped in nori and fried, and other things I'm not remembering. All quite good. We've been here a couple of times before and they don't disappoint.

Next was a stop at New World Mall where we browsed all the food vendors and three of us shared Sichuan dumplings in spicy oil. VERY good.

On we went to Golden Mall after food-window-shopping up the street. Some beautiful suckling pig at one place in particular. Downstairs in the "mall" Bob and I shared a "spicy cumin lamb burger." Quite spicy but not too much. Pika and four just watched us :)

A final stop at Nan Xiang for two orders of XLB and some hot tea (it was REALLY cold out today!). They are the large ones with six to an order. We all agreed that we prefer the smaller ones with 12 dumplings but these were nice and juicy with the wrapper being thin enough but not so thin that it tore while being picked up.

What a fun time. Chowing with CHs and Bob is even better than chowing with just Bob :) Plus we get to order more!!! Thanks again, fourunder, for your kind hospitality.

Does food eaten out of your grocery bag count?!?!? Four picked up some gorgeously cooked trotters for making stock. We just HAD to pick off some meat and crispy skin. I was sorely tempted to carry the bag on my lap rather than in the back of the SUV when being driven back. I resisted. Dammit!!!!! :)

              BTW, four trotters cost $5.40!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            2. Ashamed to admit l still have not had the Flushing experience...my chowhound dinner at Lagidze a couple of weeks ago was great; please contact me too if you do another Flushing crawl!

There's LOADS of info on CH about Flushing. What's great is that it's rather compact so it's easy to go from place to place. Even on a bitterly cold and windy day like we had.

Since we live in NorCal, we don't get to NYC nearly often enough. Maybe you should peruse the Outer Boroughs board and see if there are any regulars you could drag out there. Shouldn't be hard :)

Ah, l thought you were a NYC local. Yeah, l'm gonna hit up SteveR, Dave Cook and Ziggy now.

That's one of the nicest things anyone's ever accused me of :)

And, if you're ever back around these parts, let us know.

                      1. re: Steve R

You betcha! We hadn't been in over four years and that's not going to happen again. We've always had dim sum in Flushing but this was LOTS more fun. I know we can count in fourunder for future forays :)

                    2. re: howdini

                2. This was lots of foodie fun, despite the beastly weather.

It was the coldest, windiest of our almost two weeks. You were a trooper :)
